I've so been there. Save every bit of documentation you have from every single tiny part of the fiasco. Make photocopies and store them someplace removed from the originals -- like another house in another town if possible. Unfortunately, this kind of thing is never over, and if you don't have the ability to prove the entire story every time, you will lose money over it.

Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear right now, but I know things from experience, and I wish I'd known them from the beginning.
