The blessing of the past

A woman from the pollanesque community put up an article from Cooking Light, where Michael Pollan spoke about how their house isn't always simple because his son is a very picky eater medically. It was an insightful article about the kid, but what it really got me think about was my tastes now and how my childhood formed them. I am quite specially a ( Read more... )

Come visit me in Philly! We'll go cheesesteak-hunting.

OOh. What exactly is a cheesesteak? Or is self-explanatory and I'm missing that it really is just cheese on steak? (Not that that would ever be a bad thing. Cheese on meat is a beautiful thing.)

Slices of round steak, american cheese (or Cheez Whiz, if you're feeling Philadelphian), and sauteed onions and peppers or mushrooms on a hoagie roll. It's practically Philadelphia's traditional food *grins* and entirely delicious. I happen to live six blocks from the best cheesesteak place in Philly. *tempts!* It's not exactly exotic cuisine, but it's definitely local!

Wow. We're... so opposite. XP I was raised on fast food and Chef Boyardee. Since we've always lived so far from school, and school was so far from out after-school activities, if we didn't eat at Taco Bell, we wouldn't eat til 9pm or later. My mom packed me the same lunch for ten or eleven years. So I got turned into a fairly picky eater in the sense that I don't really like trying new things. Which is a habit I still have. :\ Mrk.

Wow. That makes me giggle and shake my head all at once. And want to drag you out to a million restaurants, which, you know, I wouldn't since it's not my place to change that. I love it but I don't know many people like me in this way either. At least one of my ex's thought the idea of staying within his normal box was the only way one could live and he used to make comments about my inability to be decisive when it came to food because of it.

I, also, once again love LJ because it proves another foundation for exchange on lives of everyone and all sorts of them which I am endlessly curious about, too!

That's really cool. I'm gonna see if Mouse will be cool with letting me do this with her little girl.

Have you ever seen that show "Bizarre Foods" with Andrew Zimmern?

Oooh. I have not. Tell me of this new show I should find?

oh oh oh it is SO MUCH FUN. Okay, this guy Andrew Zimmern.... he's ADORABLE. He's this teddybear Jewish guy.... imagine Nathan Lane with a more tolerable voice. He has this show where he just travels to countries all over the world and finds the WEIRDEST FOODS they eat there and tries them and tells the camera what it's like. It's awesome fun and he's so adorable. x3 It's a very entertaining show.

See? CUTE!!!

*raises hand* Me too. On the milk end of things, and the junkfood. We had balanced meals, but after school I'd hit up ENTIRE rolls of Pillsbury Chocolate Chip cookie dough, and have constant access to entire boxes of hostess cuppycakes or twinkies or fruit roll ups and that's not to mention the candy dish that sat on the coffee table...

But I love what your mother did for you. Mine never did anything remotely similar. The closest to "different" we ever got was Mexican food. She was always very opposed to "different" herself, on all points, even beyond food. So I am stealing this idea. And I LOVElovelove that she didn't let you order for yourselves. I want to crawl up a wall and scream everytime I see a parent cave in a restaurant that has perfectly good OTHER food, but the kid demands cheeseburgers or corn dogs or some other mediocre thing on the "kids" menu.
