San Fran Performance Art Thing

Man, this project is really taking shape. I can't wait to be a part of this!!!

This is what Jack wrote to us as an outline of the show:

I have a pretty clear idea of the overall content and flow of the show, but I don’t want my ideas to get too embedded before I start interacting and collaborating with the other contributors to this project. Nevertheless, here is an outline of the musical and the venue setting which is part of the show. The audience will be encouraged to wear appropriate costume or clothing. Many of our performers will enter with the audience anonymously including the schoolgirl, the clown and our heroines as well as some of our antagonists. The ethos of the event will be classic avant garde, underground San Francisco and will have elements of Cirque du Soleil, Sideshow and any hot cutting edge ideas we can incorporate.

(The Sacred  Pain Band will be doing background music including appropriate covers of songs relating to BDSM as well as originals)

House darkens and music fades as show opens. The MC/Announcer (I picture a kind of carnival barker type) will appear on stage to make appropriate announcements, etc.

Scene 1:

House lights go up to classroom scene as if audience is class. The stage will have whiteboard, teacher’s desk and appropriate props.

Enter Professor Jack Knight…

The professor will begin a scholarly lecture on the subject of the Hero’s Journey as described by Joseph Campbell and Inspired by Carl Jung’s archetypes; this will lead in to a focus on the ancient damsel in distress motif as it has occurred in myth and literature and how it is essential to the journey and is, within itself, a Hero’s Journey. A few minutes into the lecture, the cell phone of a schoolgirl on the second row will go off and she will answer it and begin texting. The professor will firmly call her to the front and tell her she is to be punished. Her reluctance will be overwhelmed by the “ushers” including Lew Rubens who will forcefully drag her to the front, tie her to the desk and I will administer a spanking with a ruler.

As the spanking begins in earnest, the band will begin playing one of our original songs, “Naughty Schoolgirl.”

Each of the following 6 or so scenes will follow a similar pattern: the re-enactment of a scene or cliché from myth, literature, history or other genre of art depicting the damsel in distress. I have specific ideas for all of these but I don’t want to publish too much at this early point. I also want to leave room for other possibly better ideas.

As this project takes shape, we will need to acquire props, etc, so I will list them as they are identified. I am beginning interviews and auditions next week and hope to have the musical ensemble practicing as soon as the week after.

Here are some props and equipment I will need. (I will purchase them if necessary as they are props that will be needed for our studio also):

Fog machine
Spot light
Rolling Whiteboard (for school scene)
Small Teacher’s desk
