fiannaharpar made a post a few weeks ago that I thought would be worth passing along, since I'm currently thinking about it.
There is a Christian group called
Angel Food Ministries that provides food at a bulk discount rate. The general idea is to help those who are "in need", but they also specifically state that "if you eat, you qualify"... they don't require you to have a particularly low income. I am guessing that how pushy they are about Chrisitanity depends on the location... but I'm hopeful that it's not too much.
The bulk discount part is that they offer a pre-set box of stuff once a month... that changes from month to month. It costs $30 for the box. I've looked at it both of the last two months, and the box has a nice variety of food in it. It's a little hard for me to think I'll do it every month, since I'm picky and I'd hate to waste stuff. But this month looks like almost all stuff I'll eat ^_^ And they have "Specials" each month that are an extra box of somethiing (often some selection of meats) for around $20. Although you can't buy just the "Special" boxes. You have to order at the beginning of the month and pick up at the end of the month.
Anyway... I think this could be really useful for us, at least while I'm still waiting on the stupid raise/promotion. And I thought there are probably other people on my friends list who could use it. And they have ministries in lots of states. So... I'm spreading the word.
Hopefully, we'll be dropping our order form off at
the Oakland location tomorrow. I'll try to remember to post about how it goes for us this month.
