Riddle me this:
I can apply for a job halfway across the world, go, get fired, apply to another job in full disclosure of the how's and why's of my firing, and be fine. I come home, and spend five months jobsearching, applying to jobs by hounding the corporation up and down until I got an interview. applying for jobs by dropping a resume on the counter and then checking back a few weeks later, applying for jobs with my whole work and education history, and with tailored applications, and with no work history whatsoever, with five references on the front page, with the words "references on request", and with none at all, applying in street clothes and in my best suit at the likes of delis, banks, hotels, for grout-cleaning, lawncare, tutoring, sandwich-making.
I hear "no."
Sometimes, depending on how much suit and history I've put in, I'll get "You're very impressive, but..." before it.
How can I get a job halfway across the world, and keep getting offers ... and come home and get nothing?
work,
self-respect,
job
