Navigating Namibia

Namibia is more fascinating than I could have imagined and I only have 10 minutes to tell you about it.

The terrain changes from canyon to dunes within a hundred kilometers. Then you find ocean with dunes rising on one side...

We have renewed our friendship with Tammy and Kelly and are now enjoying camping and making meals by tiny stove. We are laughing under the stars and listening to the barking sand geckos in the Namib desert. We began our Namibia trip in Ai-Ais hot springs and then headed out early to walk along the edge Fish River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world. We have to drive long distances between places, but we have good music and T and K brought travel comupter Yahtzee to keep us occupied. Yesterday morning we awoke before the sun to drive out to watch the sunrise in the Namib desert, one of the oldest in the world. The night before we drove out to dune 45 and watched one of the most stunning sunsets I have ever seen. The ball of fire that is the sun wavered down into the dunes in the far distance. Yesterday though we got to hike up a dune and found ourselves a pan- has water in it ever 10 years or so, called Dead Vlei. The dying trees created a stark contrast to the white of the dried mud. Really beautiful. This morning we saw hundreds of flamingos in Walvis Bay and we are now having a recharge/laundry/food shopping day in Swakopmund. There really is very little between places because there are only 1.8 million people in the whole country! I will probably not be able to write again until Windhoek or South Africa, so probably another few weeks.
Love to all, Nabia
