For a person to change, they must die.
In order for a new personality to be born, the life that they now lead must fall and become dead. This is not something that takes place over the course of a long period of time - it is immediate.
For a person to rebuild, they must tear down
A structure that is not sound could collapse at any moment. The way that people unsoundly develop their own structures can lead to a personal collapse. One must clear the construction site before a new building can be erected.
For a person to stand, their ground must be solid.
To devise a rigid construct from steel and brick, and then to see if it floats is foolish and wasteful. Once a site has been established, a foundation must be poured and allowed to cure before any framework be attempted.
For a person to heal, they must never look back.
The story of Orpheus traveling into the underworld to find his Eurydice expresses the humanistic desire to doubt oneself and to look back. It takes great strength to walk and simply know that you're doing right and that everything is behind you now.
For a person to move on, they must not die again.
It's a great gift to be able to die and take a new path. It is important that, once you make a decision, that you do not die inside again for making that choice and fail yourself by regressing back to it.
