She sat sobbing alone in the bleakly lit room. The power had been cut off. She couldn't call anyone because the phone had been cut off as well. Things use to be so good. Things use to be so easy. She knew this was a test. But what was it that she was suppose to learn? She'd slave and work all week but yet she still didn't make ends meet. How could the Gods allow her to fall into this sort of travesty? She looked out the window beside her bed. "Why?!" she cried "What is it that I'm suppose to learn?! I've suffered and suffered yet nothing has changed. Why am I to be put through this?!" Just as she finished her last words the bedroom door swung open and in entered a young woman dressed in white. Her flaxen hair hung around her shoulders. She spoke but yet her lips did not budge.
"I am Diana. I am Bast. I am Briget. I am a thousand other names. I am the Daughter." The woman's eyes sofened as she saw the girl's tears. "I know there is much pain. And I know the suffering is great but this is how you must learn. This is we must grow. Without pain there is no change."
"But to what end is this lesson? To what point is this pain?" the tears grew in numbers as the young girl continued to sob.
"Only the wiser shall know." And with that the woman stood up, gave the girl a smile, and headed towards the door. At once there appeared a brilliant light for only a moment.
Then through the door came another woman, glowing in the late stages of pregnacy. Her smile lifted the girl's spirits ever so slightly and the tears became less frequent.
"I am Cerridwen. I am Hera. I am Danu. I am a thousand other names. I am the Mother." she placed both hands on her swollen stomach and sighed. "Soon it will be time for the re-birth. Not only that of God but your's as well."
"MY re-birth? But I have not yet left this life Mother."
"Your re-birth into the future my child."
"Yes, but what does the future hold?!"
" Only the wisest will know." And with that she headed back towards the door, turning back only to smile. Moments later the doorway lit with an ominous purple glow and in hobbled a bent old woman, crippled with age and time. The girl became afraid and clutch her blanket to her chest.
"I am Hecate. I am the Fates. I am Hela. I am the Crone." her knuckles whitened around the cane she carried. "Your lesson my child is this: over come your pride."
"My pride? What does m pride have to do with this?"
"There are those who would help you, but your pride has always gotten in the way and will always get in the way unless you do something about it. If you've dug yourself into a hole child you must ask for someone to pull you out."
The girl sat there silent, with her head hung. The Crone stood up and hobbled towards the door. "Be well my child, learn in this life so as not to repeat it in the next." And with that she vanished.
The girl looked into the dark of the night as the clouds moved to reveal the light of the moon. She sighed and spoke softly, "I will try."
