Got this from a forum on
NaNoWriMo.org and it was a great challenge, so I'm going to post it here for anyone to see and do!
1. Take a look at this site (
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/rp_tutorials/63321.html) of words for writing prompts.
2. Find a random number generator (I use
http://www.random.org) and get three numbers to chose what prompts to use.
3. Combine them, open up Word (or whatever program you use), close your eyes, and start writing.
IMPORTANT: Don't open your eyes or stop until you have run out of ideas to write about - then you can go through and make it legible.
Since you're not paying any attention to the wordcount, there's no pressure to write more. And it's easier to focus and visualize what you're trying to write if you're not making sure your typing and grammar and spelling is all correct. You're just trying to get the image across while combining all of your prompts.
For example:
I got "Blood," "Body," and "Pirates."
202 words in five minutes, which I realize isn't exactly super great, but it is for me! :D
It was Halloween time again, a time that Caren absolutely hated. But of course, she couldn't get away with not throwing a huge party. Costumes were optional, having a good time was mandatory. She invited Elliott, which in retrospect probably wasn't exactly the best idea considering their history.
The party was underway, about a half an hour after people started to show up, Elliott arrived. He was wearing a tattered old pirate costume, with blood stains on his coat.
"Elliott, what are you wearing? Caren asked him.
I'm wearing a Pirate costume! Duh," he told her, smiling. "What are you wearig?"
"I'm wearing a Marilyn Monroe dress, of course. I'm supposed to glamoruous, not trashy."
"Then you shouldn't have dressed up like Marilyn!"
"You look ridiculous, Elliott."
"I know, but I'm having fun." He smiled again.
At the end of the night Caren came back to Elliott, who had gotten several compliments on his authentic costume.
"So, you still think I look stupid?"
"Yeah, I still do. Just look at your body! Covered in fake blood, wearing a fake pirate costume. You are so ridiculous!"
Elliott smiled yet again at her. "You're just jealous because I had more fun than you did."
