'omg, Alex actually talked a teeny tiny bit about what's going on in his head - to two different people!' I KNOW! It's a miracle! And they weren't patients or random bar pick ups, but actually people that understand him and know him best. Huzzah!
I agree with everything you said about Bailey, and I (hopefully) alluded to that in my post. I just think it wasn't written very well... we 'thinkers' of the show will probably understand that this is why she did what she did, or, at least be able to speculate it to be the case, but the 'me, me, me' was SO heavy handed that it really wasn't portrayed as about about him in the slightest.
I think a scene between Bailey and someone, probably Meredith, where they agreed that something needed to be done and came up with that as the 'scenario most likely', would have added so much to the whole set-up, not least would have been some recognition by Meredith that Alex almost died and may not be coping with it as well as he's letting on. No, his keeping the bullet wasn't mentally healthy, but all we heard about was the physical ramifications, like he's too stupid to figure those out on his own...
As for Mer and Alex. Yes. Some recognition by Mere of what he went through is SO LONG OVERDUE! I'd also be interested to see her tell him about the miscarriage... they have this connection when it comes to their views on family (and how terrified they are by the notion of having one of their own).
I think Mark THINKS he loves Lexie... and 'gets' her and is 'good' for her and is what she 'needs' and all those things... but I don't actually think ANY of it is the truth. I think he loves the IDEA of Lexie. The good girl that will be able to 'fix' him. But Lexis isn't really that person... and I don't think she ever has been... None of what Mark spouted in his various speeches to Callie makes me think that he actually thought about LEXIE at all during his consideration processes...
Thoughts on Alex going ahead? If you wanna share of course...!
I KNOW! It's a miracle! And they weren't patients or random bar pick ups, but actually people that understand him and know him best. Huzzah! It's almost as if the writers remembered that he is a main character who has established relationships with other characters!
I agree that Bailey's speech wasn't written well, but neither are a lot of other things about the show these days, alas. At least it gave us enough to rationalise, which is something...not enough, but something. And I am resigned to the fact that those who prefer to watch shows at a surface level and not think too ddeeply about anything will never understand character motivations, whether spelled out or not. It frustrates me, although more with some shows than others, but I am resigned to it.
It would have been very cool to see Bailey and Meredith discussing Alex, not least because it would prove that he matters enough to at least some of the people around him that they remember he exists when he isn't physically present!
Definitely agree that Mark is in love with the idea of what he thinks Lexie means to him, rather than truly seeing and valuing her for who she really is. That final scene between them really emphasised how much they should not get back together, certainly not at the moment - Lexie is absolutely nowhere near the same place that Mark is, and while he's still hung up on the idea of proposing to her (forgetting that she already turned him down once), I think getting back together with him is the last thing on her mind.
Thoughts on Alex going ahead? Do you mean in an ideal world or what we're more likely to actually see? In an ideal world, starting next week the show would go back to being about Meredith, Cristina and Alex and their struggles on the way to becoming real surgeons, with the rest of the cast merely their supporting players. Alex would have meaningful scenes with both Meredith and Cristina, reflecting the different but longstanding relationships he has with both. He would go back to working on cases with Arizona, underlining that his future lies in paeds. It would be acknowledged that the trauma counsellor was completely useless, since he clearly bought into the facade of bravado Alex likes to throw on instead of recognising how messed up he really is. The people around him would acknowledge that he was as badly injured as Derek and just as traumatised as the rest of them. Maybe he would finally get some genuine closure on his Izzie issues and maybe make an active choice to focus on his career for a while and make strides there, avoiding romantic complications, whether of the crazy variety or otherwise, at least until he's had time to process some of the crap he's had thrown at him lately. We would learn more about him! And so on.
In reality, I think we are likely to get little more than crumbs. But a girl can dream! And some of those crumbs might carry enough traces of the above to carry us through...
This is probably going to sound like a cop out but... your 'ideal world' thoughts...? THAT IS WHAT I WANT! You've literally thought of everything. How soon can we get you a job on the writing staff???!!!!!
And some of those crumbs might carry enough traces of the above to carry us through... Or at least they'll provide inspiration for fic!
Oh, please, please can we have some of what you outlined?! I'm not above begging.
