[television] orphan black | "let these waves wash over me..."
I have this forever unfulfilling habit of falling in total curiosity and sometimes even love with television characters who are rarely, if ever, given any actual screen time. They might be mentioned as having been significant to an actual character but they, themselves, are not ACTUALLY CHARACTERS. To varying degrees. I'll fic them, sometimes at length, and typically develop intense head canons about them that are forever doomed to be nothing more than just that.

And Beth Childs...
HOW GOOD WAS THE SEASON FOUR PREMIERE OF ORPHAN BLACK?! I mean, I know I'm completely biased for reasons mentioned above, but it really was freaking excellent, right? Back to its best? Season three was kinda meh in parts and I was wondering how much more convoluted and confusing the whole thing was going to get this season, BUT THEY STARTED IT PERFECTLY!
I love how, until now, we've only had Sarah's version of Beth and a couple of scenes of Video Camera!Beth, and how, even though there are definitely similarities, Actual Beth was someone different altogether. And Tatiana Maslany has done an amazing job of differentiating all the versions we've seen. JUST AS SHE HAS DONE AN AMAZING JOB OF EVERYTHING ELSE, TBQH.
I loved the Beth/Paul dynamic knowing what I know. So creepy and awful and beautiful and PERFECT FOR ME!!

I also loved the Alison/Beth and Cosima/Beth relationships and the virtually throw away moments that tied this flashback to information we already have (Beth teaching Alison to shoot, Cosima trying to joke with Beth). Not to mention all the other bits and pieces we were gifted, like Felix being arrested and Art helping Beth cover up the way she killed Maggie Chen, Raj in general, and RAMONE!! "Horny little bastard."
I think it was a great decision by TPTB to take things back to the start. It really was the best way for them to move forward from the mess they've created and have people actually able to follow along for the first time in quite a while!!
PLUS, LIKE, BETH!!! AND PAUL! And all the other things I've already said! I knew it was Beth within seconds of the episode starting (that's how good TM is!) and was shushed by my housemate twice in the first four minutes due to JOYFUL SQUEALING.
#no regrets
Obviously, now I want ALL THE FLASHBACKS. OBVIOUSLY.
Sidenote: Aussie band, Serpents of the She had one of their songs featured in the episode! And another is going to be in episode two, I believe. WOOT WOOT. Represent.
