Triple J are running a mid-year competition to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the annual Hottest 100 Countdown. They're asking people to vote for their top twenty songs from the past twenty years. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS NOT A CHALLENGE I COULD POSSIBLY TURN DOWN. I've had to split this into two posts due to the fact that I can NEVER seem to control myself when it comes to Things About Music!! SURPRISE!!

Even today, the lyrics from this song still remain a thing of beauty to me! And I do recall having something of a crush on the Finn brothers at this stage, too!
Honourable mention:
RUNAWAY TRAIN | Soul Asylum
I remember being deeply affected by the use of actual missing people in the film clip to this song when I used to watch it on Rage, and even to this day I find the whole thing chilling. Also, this song totally counts because it wasn't released in Australia until 1993, despite being released in the US the year before (I believe).

ANTHEM OF MY YOUTH, TBQH.
Honourable mentions:
ZOMBIE | The Cranberrries
My sister and I drove my mother batshit ~insane by playing this song incessantly and singing along to the chorus! I mean, Dolores barely manages to make it sound tolerable, let alone two tone deaf teenagers screeching it at the top of their lungs. Heh. We were awesome kids.
ROUND HERE | Counting Crows
Still utterly, completely, totally, and unapologetically in love with this song, these lyrics, this band, and this voice. Oh, god.
MMMM MMMM MMMM MMMM | Crash Test Dummies
This dude's voice used to ~intrigue me because of how low it was! I still find it kind of haunting, tbh.
BLACK HOLE SUN | Soundgarden

Mainstream radio here in Australia only ever played the censored version of this song (with the first verse removed), but I remember getting a copy of the full thing and thinking I was the ~actual ~coolest!
Honourable mentions:
GANGSTA'S PARADISE | Coolio
I remember being so impressed with myself the first time I managed to sing along to the whole song, error free. Quite the accomplishment for a middle class white girl from Tasmania! Boom.
IT'S OH SO QUIET | Bjork
DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER | Oasis
Actually, pretty much insert the entire What's the Story, Morning Glory? album here. 'Champagne Supernova', 'Wonderwall', and 'Some Might Say' are definitely up there too, but the whole thing is glorious from start to finish.

Still so completely addicted to this band. Along with Silverchair, they really were the mainstay for me for SO LONG.
Honourable mentions:
SO MUCH TO SAY | Dave Matthews Band
SPACEMAN | Babylon Zoo
I had no idea (and still have no idea) what this song was supposed to be about, but I remember being addicted to it once! TEENAGE ANGST O'RAMA, "I can't get off the carousel, I can't get off this world..." OH LOL.
KILLING ME SOFTLY | The Fugees
I remember being convinced I sounded truly glorious when I sang along to this!

Honourable mentions:
NO APHRODISIAC | The Whitlams
LOVEFOOL | The Cardigans
PUSH | Matchbox 20
THE DRUGS DON'T WORK | The Verve
Actually, this would have to be pretty close to beating Natalie out for the top spot, but I'm not going to change it because everyone already knows the gloriousness of this tune, whereas I feel Pigeons and Crumbs will be a new one for lots of people.

CHILLS. I could listen to this version of this song all day every day ever and never not love it. Full kudos to Hunters and Collectors for its existence in the first place.
PURE MORNING | Placebo
This was the first single from this album released here in Australia. The rest were released the next year when the album as a whole was released. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY DRAGGED OUT THE AMAZINGNESS, OH YES.

My sister and I were head over heels in love with Ella Hooper, the lead singer of this band. She was sixteen when they released this song, and HOLY COW, HER VOICE!!
Honourable mentions:
MY WAY HOME | Alex Lloyd
OH MAAAAAN, this version of this song?? It was recorded live on an Aussie TV show called The Panel which I used to freaking LOVE. And as much as the original of this song is glorious, this live version is SUBLIME. The end.
EVERY YOU, EVERY ME | Placebo
The whole of this album, 'Without You I'm Nothing', was and still is glorious.
PASSENGER | Powderfinger
EMOTION SICKNESS | Silverchair
'Neon Ballroom' is probably my favourite of all the Silverchair albums, and if you only want to own one, this is the one to own. Daniel Johns is an acutal genius.
PRAISE YOU | Fatboy Slim
LEARN TO FLY | Foo Fighters
BEST FILM CLIP EVERRRRRR.

I think that, if I could go back in time, DMB Live at Radio City in New York would be the moment in time I'd choose to visit from a musical point of view. I've seen the DVD and the whole thing is perfection from start to finish and
catteo, your opinion on this matter is not valid :)
