Thank you so much for reading and commenting! This show has really captured my fic-writing imagination and I'm glad that the results are being enjoyed by more than just me :)
Thank you!!!
Also, I LOVE your icon! There are not nearly enough of them around for this fandom!

Thank you! :) It was actually only when I was about to comment on your story that I realized that I didn't have a Chicago Fire icon yet and was all, 'OMG, I HAVE TO MAKE ONE!' *g*

Perhaps, he thinks, she is the only one besides him that has remembered.
Now, why you gotta do this to me? The fact that nobody AT ALL remembers his birthday is basically the saddest premise to the rest of his fucked-up life that you could have picked. It is not fair and it makes me want to pick him up and cuddle him.
Remember that time you killed your best friend?
And then this! Because he didn't. Andy went into that building even though he didn't know if it was safe. And it was nobody's fault, just a horrendous accident, but Kelly will never believe that it wasn't because of him. Also, he should have been the one etc etc (I believe we discussed how you made me cry with that one the last time).
And he’s counting down to the moment when it all falls apart.
Love the inevitability of it all. He knows what's coming, but he can't stop himself.
The pain is not the only thing that’s missing ( ... )

The fact that nobody AT ALL remembers his birthday is basically the saddest premise to the rest of his fucked-up life that you could have picked. You wanna know a secret? There was another 1000 words of this fic that I ended up deleting that dealt with EXACTLY this fact. The reason I deleted it was because I felt it detracted from what I was trying to achieve with this. AAAND because I think I want to write a follow up. You know how we've talked about visualising scenes when we write? Who's where and doing what and who else are they with and what does the room look ( ... )

This is fabulous, and painful, and glorious and real and layered and . . . and I'll be back later to say more about why.
And, thank you! You absolutely captured what I was driving at, and MUCH more. <3

Matt text him once, three weeks ago now. It had said, You’re late. Only, without the apostrophe because Matt’s never really cared for being grammatically correct when he’s pissed off.
Matt’s always pissed off.
There's not a syllable of this fic that isn't heartbreaking, I think - but for some reason, this relatively simple thing, just . . . broke me!! Because he knows Matt so intimately, to the level of how his use of a freaking apostrophe reflects his mood; he's noticed this, not dismissed it as a typo, observed what it means. And all Matt can say to him is "You're late" and be pissed at him . . . ALWAYS! GUH!
This passage also kind of defined for me who he is in this fic (even who he is). He's simultaneously immersed in, craving connections, with people that really matter to him and, when that doesn't work out, almost anyone, while acting as though and convincing himself that he doesn't want them.
I mean, this:
‘Lunch’ is a euphemism; she has less than zero interest in catching up. He thinks, that’s okay, ( ... )
