Ah ha! And now, in hindsight, seeing that I added a whole heap of new episode spoilers in my reply to you, it was excellent work on your part! Thanks for that!!

Katherine is definitely above what's going on in Mystic Falls at the moment. She is no doubt off being entirely fabulous somewhere else. Probably with Izzie Stevens.

I actually, honestly think the single most consistently written character on this show has ~always been Elena. I just don't think the writers GET how consistently they write her, or how at odds with their more than obvious intentions she comes across. And by that I mean, I don't think their consistency is deliberate!! I think it's simply a result of her position on the (ridiculously unnecessary) pedestal she's been placed on.

a "bad" arc for a character is not actually bad if they deem the character to be "good," WORD! And we all know Elena is deemed as even 'better' than "good" so... I mean, her Greatest Flaw is that she Cares Too Much and is Too Compassionate. This is a canon statement that has been made on many occasions by both the other characters, Elena herself and Julie Plec. [Even though I personally disagree with the notion WHOLEHEARTEDLY and don't think it's how she's actually written on the show!!].

Re. "the five". I've heard a rumour about that if you're interested... And about Tyler/Caroline/Klaus/Hayley.

See, I will always maintain that up until about halfway through s3 there was not the written emphasis on Elena's goodness that suddenly came to be when the triangle appeared and all the bad writing came to play. I think Elena's character probably is consistent but what is emphasised about her in the writing and through other characters is inconsistent, and has become kind of tacky since about halfway through s3, imo at least.

I am always interested in spoilerzzz.

When the triangle appeared halfway through season three?? Whaaaa?? Hasn't the triangle been there since AT LEAST Miss Mystic Falls? Isn't that really what the whole show is based on? Unless I've misunderstood something in what you've said?

Well, I don't know if they're spoilers at all, they're just comments I've read that other people have said, speculation if you will!!

1 - that 'the five' are somehow capable of reverting Elena back to human!Elena, hence Klaus' interest in keeping that dude alive because then she'd be useful to him again for making more hybrids...

2 - that Hayley/Tyler is a fakeout and that Hayley may even end up being another Lockwood (possibly a half-sister from an affair of his father's).

The triangle did appear in Miss Mystic Falls. However, there is a distinction between the triangle that appeared in 1x19, and ~~~the triangle of angst and doom and CHOICE, DEAR LORD THE CHOICE~~~ that appeared somewhere in s3.

Yep. Because my assumption of this series is that it will end with Elena becoming human again. Like honestly, I almost want to find a tab somewhere that will take money on it, because that's how confident I am that this is how the series will end/which direction it will go.

As for 2, I hope so! Because I don't want another nasty triangle type situation for no reason other than... well, no reason.

Ooooh, now I get it! CHOICE, DEAR LORD THE CHOICE~~~ Heeeeee. OH, KILL ME NOWWWW!!

I still maintain Elena's pedestal has been in place since day dot, so that's something we'll have to agree to disagree on! I do however think it was far more subtle in the earlier days, but nevertheless still there in spades. I'd go so far as to say the writers/Julie put the character on a pedestal even BEFORE the first episode aired and have ~always written her with that notion in their heads (ie. the notion that Elena = the "Good" verison of Katherine, the version that the Salvatore boys "deserve") and it has coloured everything that's happened since...

Because my assumption of this series is that it will end with Elena becoming human again. Yeah, I can totally see that happening too...

And I think 'no reason' is exactly the RIGHT REASON for not wanting another Triangle/Square!!
