I am so late to this party. But I have thoughts, The Vampire Diaries thoughts. And so I thought I'd make the most of this sudden turn of events and share them. Feel free to ignore :)
I love your thoughts, they are filled with awesome.
I called Elena turning when in the previous episode Damon said; 'And in sixty years we'll be brothers again like nothing happened', I was all, aww sweet, oh, this isn't good. You make such a great point, and I hadn't even thought about that; Elena turning (or just considering turning) as self sacrifice would've made such a brilliant parallel, it's a shame the writers didn't explore it.
Also, did anyone else think the whole 'Stefan saves Matt and leaves a completely conscious and lucid Elena in the vehicle' thing was so ridiculously contrived?! There are so many other ways that could have gone down, all of which make a shed load more sense than what we actually got.
I have ranted so much about this, so much, it's possibly partly due to my pent up 'I don't get why he didn't get the Gilbert's out of the car' which I've been going on about (and think Elena should be more pissed about) since season one. And was really looking forward to find out this ep, and then he does it again. Do not get me started again. Ok, one last time, even if we say that his vampire powers didn't work under water--which I have no idea why they wouldn't--he could've gotten her out and let her swim up while he took care of Matt. And the car is on the freaking floor, which means he has something to push off of, could've just flown the car out.
And yes, flashback out of characterness was completely out of character, but I don't think he would've been ruthless with her, because even near the beginning of season one, he was all watching her sleep and stuff (but also giving her nightmares) but show seems to have forgotten how in love with Katherine he was, he would've been much more freaked out, and would want to know who this was, and what she had to do with Katherine, this would've been an interrogation at best. But I did actually like the foreshadowing, and the whole 'love that consumes' because I really think that mirrors Damon and Elena's thoughts on love, and Elena already said Damon consumes her, but that doesn't mean she has to have realised yet that he's the one she wants. It made the whole ridiculous triangle of these past few episodes a little less ridiculous. Though I didn't like how many contrivances there were with Stefan to get there, show do not turn one of your best characters into an irrelevant love obstacle. And I say this as someone who doesn't ship either side of the triangle.
Caroline/Tyler have definitely had some very perfect bits this season, but for me this wasn't one of them; it felt too Romeo-Juliet, sugary-sweet, though I did really love the whole Liz Carol Caroline Tyler scene, and wanted more of that. Lol, fake ID's, sweetie your kids can compell people. Also I realised on second watching that during the goodbye it's actually Klaus from the beginning of it, which ruins it somewhat.
Originals were freakin epic. I completely agree with what you said, and I loved Elijah saying 'maybe this will teach him some manners' and Rebekah phones Stefan to apologise before she kills Elena; why are Rebekah/Stefan not more of a thing.
As for Alaric: It's simple; this is why it's bad to play with your food, everyone's having fun torturing until your food gets up and runs away. Also I think he needs Damon to fight back; everything Evilaric says, everything he does is explained 'Caroline enjoys killing' and 'Elena needs parents' it's twisted logic but it's there, Damon not fighting back doesn't fit his twisted schematic.
Wow, I hadn't even considered the possibility that Tyler consented, I'd just thought Bonnie had gone proper darkside, which I do hope the show explores nicely. I suppose maybe he could've consented to make sure Caroline stays alive.
I personally liked the end sequences (even with all there issues), but for me 3.21 was more of a star than this one. (And my favourite episode was also 3.03 TEOTA, but that's because of the Klefan shipper madness).
To be honest, I spent most of last episode laughing uproariously at the ridiculousness and so I didn't pick up on Elena's imminent date with vampire-dom before the very start of this episode (well, at least not beyond thinking it had to happen soon enough). And on that note, that's why this episode is so far ahead of last week's for me. I honestly thought last week was full of unintentional crack and was basically stupid! Haha!!
Re. Elena turning. I really just wish the reasoning behind it had been more character driven than plot driven. It would have been much more interesting that way. But, as they've done so often this season, the writers chose to go the easier scrappy plot writing route, as opposed to the more intricate exploration of characterisation route...
As for your ire at Stefan not saving Elena's parents right back at the start, and Elena not really caring one iota about it, YES, THIS!! Also an old issue of mine and I'm glad that there are others that remember it!! The whole thing (actually, both things!!) were plot contrivances of the worst kind.
The reason I think Damon would have reacted more ruthlessly with Elena in the flashback is because he was in 'lay down dead on the road' mode, which canon would have us think is basically him at rock bottom. I can't imagine him reaching that point, then spotting someone who looked like Katherine, then just casually having a chat about her boyfriend issues. It was stooooopid. And no doubt a handwave to the D/E shippers to make up for the S/E-ness of the rest of the episode.
I'm not convinced about Klaus being 'in' Tyler in that last scene, because how would he have known about so much (ie. the comment about Tyler's mother). I have only watched once and maybe a re-watch will clear it up, but yeah, I'm not yet convinced about that. As for them being too R&J-y this episode, I really didn't get that vibe either (but I think that could have been in part due to the fact that they had three minutes of screen time!). To me, they just came across as mature young adults in a new-ish but committed relationship. It had that giddy 'young/new love' quality to it, without being so completely over the top a la E/S in season one/two. I also think my appreication of their scenes was due to the deep contrast I felt there was between the portrayal of Tyler when compared to particularly Damon but also Stefan. But again, maybe I need to re-watch re. where Tyler becomes Klaus...? Not that it will change my opinion of the brothers, but it may influence my views of Tyler (though, unlikely! I have many feelings for that boy these days!).
High fives for the TEOTA love! Brilliant episode was brilliant. The end. Amen!
Yeah, I get what you mean, I think the crack was a big part of the reason I loved 3.21 so much, I mean Klaus is throwing fence posts, and then I'm somehow rooting for Klaus to steal Elena just to get cracky Klaus/Stefan/Elena roadtrip :D.
Oh yay for me not being the only one who fixates on the elder!Gilberts deaths and Elena's reactions.
I think sometimes Damon lies in the road for rock-bottomness. Sometimes vampires just need to lie in a road for snacks :D. But you're right, nothing will stop the casual chat being stupid.
Ooh, I hadn't thought of Tyler knowing stuff, I only got the idea from the way Tyler was looking at her when he said 'you're strong and you have a beautiful future ahead of you' it felt like such a Klaus thing to me, and also the 'I was just with Bonnie' thing. I guess it's a mystery.
the 'I was just with Bonnie' thing is what made me wonder if it was an arrangement between he and Bonnie... BUT I DO NOT KNOWWWWWWWW!!!! *stamps feet impatiently* I DO NOT like not knowing!!
Butting in is actively encouraged over this way!! .it's totally her to get swept up in the ~grand ~romantic ~gesture and kind of enjoy that aspect of it instead of just seeing it as a road trip. 110% agree now that you've pointed it out! As I've said previously, I rarely have to have an independent thought about this show these days!! Haha! But no, seriously, I think you're completely accurate (and obvs this was supported by Plec so...).
