Me and the Frat Boys

Anecdote: I was driving through Berkeley toward the freeway on my way home the other day, feeling purely happy (how often does that happen?) and blasting a mix I made for my son for his birthday. Planet Rock came to an end and I skipped the next song and then U Can't Touch This came on and I was bouncing in my seat at a red light when a black Lexus with tinted windows pulled up alongside me. After a moment I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and heard some hooting--distinctly male hooting--and I surmised that someone in the Lexus was trying to get my attention.

Against my better judgment I glanced over: several someones, it turned out. The windows were rolled down and the car was completely packed with young guys (late teens? Early 20s? I didn't look long enough to be sure; white and tending towards baseball caps and bulging arm muscles in any case, classic jock/frat boy types) and they were grinning delightedly at me and bobbing their heads and pumping their fists in time to the music. I couldn't help but grin back.

Of course I looked away again pretty quickly, and then the light changed and they rolled up their windows and sped off like the agro youngsters they were. But for a second there we were on the same page, the frat boys and the vaguely gothy 40ish lady in the mom-mobile, just purely enjoying the music together, and it was kind of awesome.
