Marginally recovered from his quadruple bypass, Clinton has jumped into the Kerry campaign and begun making appearances. Do you think this will help or hinder Kerry in the long run? According to a CNN article on the issue http://www.cnn.com/2004/ ( Read more... )

I don't think that Clinton will really be able to convince anyone to vote for Kerry who wasn't going to do so in the first place. As I noted in another post, the four most popular political personalities -- Laura Bush, McCain, Giuliani, and Schwarzenegger -- are all backing Bush. Each of them have, I would guess, about a 60% approval or likability rating, but 10 of those 60% in each case have already decided that they're voting for Kerry. Personally, I like Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. (D-TN) and Evan Bayh, both of whom are backing Kerry, but I'm still voting for Bush.

I think that the second part, about Clinton actually wanting W. to win this time around so that Hillary can run for an open spot in 2008, is very true. This is one of the reasons I think it would actually be good, in the long run, for the Republicans if Kerry were to win -- Hillary will never run. Almost 70% of the people voting for him are doing so first and foremost because his middle initial is not "W." The last time a "Anybody but [incumbent's name goes here]" campaign was run, Jimmy Carter was elected president. And thanks to him the Republican party got a 12-year stay on Pennsylvania Avenue.
