I think the eighties were the heyday of the West, a time of unrivaled prosperity and freedom when decadence and decay had not yet set in. How can I tell? Because movies from that time have balls. They can have a predominantly white cast and not feel apologetic about it. They can have strong female characters without making a point of it. They can even show you a camel getting punched in the fucking face. They just don't give a fuck, and that's what I love about them. Of course, this doesn't apply to all movies from the eighties (they also gave birth to pieces of shit like Big Trouble In Little China), but Conan the Barbarian is a prime example. What struck me the most about the movie is how authentic everything feels, from the costumes to the sex scenes. Part of it is due to the fact that they shot on location with very little CGI, but it's also because the movie takes itself seriously. It's a good old-fashioned epic without any of the self-consciousness and self-doubt that distinguish today's [super]hero movies, and that are also the poison that is slowly killing the Western civilization. It is genuinely inspiring (and inspiringly genuine). It's not the kind of movie we deserve, but the kind we need right now.
