A golden calf brown cow sauntered slowly down the road, paused, and blinked at Walter while chewing its cud.

It had a chinchilla on its head.

Walter blinked back at the cow.

And chincilla?

Clearly he was overdue for some sleep.

The cow moo-ed sedately at Walter.

The chinchilla appeared to be asleep.

For whatever reason, in a phenomenon experienced by many people with no real explanation, Walter mooed back at the cow.

It wasn't as though he spoke Bovine, he just made the same sound back at it.

The cow appeared to frown and took a step toward Walter.

It moo-ed again.

Walter rubbed his eyes and yawned before he mooed back at the cow again.

*stare*

*step step step*

"Moooooooo?"

That might have been tequila cow for "why aren't you in bed, young man?" It also might have been tequila cow for "stop copying me!" or "do you have any grey poupon?"

Huh. Apparently it was working.

Don't ask him what "it" was or what he planned to do with it. He had absolutely no clue.

"MooOOOoooo?"

The cow stopped.

It snorted.

The chinchilla woke up and peered blearily around.

The cow pawed at the ground. The chinchilla chittered.

The cow sedately took a few more steps forward.

Oh-kay....

Walter blinked at the cow and the chinchilla and wondered if this was real or just the result of inadequate sleep.

Eh, who cared? It wasn't boring.

"Are you two best friends because you both like to eat greens?"

The cow blinked.

The chinchilla . . . hiccuped?

Walter hiccuped back at the chinchilla.

It spared him from trying to think of anything original to say, and he rather wondered what the little thing would do.

The chinchilla and the cow both seemed to manage to convey that they thought Walter was completely insane.

Then the cow hiccuped.

Walter shrugged. He probably was. Did it really matter?

"Mooo!"

Well, at least it was entertaining.

The chinchilla hopped down from the cow's head and hopped right up onto the porch railing.

The cow followed calmly after.

Whoa.

Walter wished Nadia were there. Although if he remembered correctly, her reaction would probably be something along the lines of, "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

He liked these critters. They could just stick around and he wouldn't even let Pup poke them with sticks and then he'd talk to them and hiccup at them and moo and....

And grow progressively less coherent.

Must be the sleep deprivation.

Yes.
