history and herstory

I love local history, but I'm not totally sure why. I guess I really do like people, deep down, and local history is all about stories. Who is related to who, who lives in what house and who built it, whose ancestors did what and where and when and why.

So the Bakers Bridge Historical Association meeting was a lot of fun; Wende Bush was presenting about her ancestors, including one who was a prisoner in a Confederate military camp during the Civil War. Now I understand part of her character...sounds like her great-greats were much the same way. (I'm thinking of her great-great-etc grandfather who was a Revolutionary soldier and always voted in every election in full uniform. A young guy thought he would challenge his vote just to jest the old man, who offered to run him through with his sword should he refuse to back down on the challenge.)

And at the same time, maybe I like local history because it makes me feel like I belong. As though if I take an interest in this town, in the people, they will welcome me with open arms. They did, tonight...Laurie introduced me to the group as a guest and later I fell into conversation with several. Harold Snyder grinned and said "How's my horse girl?"

I like belonging here. Maybe I'll stay.
