Thoughts on Money and Romance in Romance Town

After watching episodes three and four of Romance Town, it strikes me that money - and how characters view it - will play a large part in the storyline. Characters that come across as good and pure suddenly become selfish when money (even a little amount) enters the picture. Meanwhile, characters you think are free spending rich kids are really all about saving people with their money. Its fairly interesting.

Soon Geum has won the lottery. Though, that money may be from the ticket that belonged to all the housekeepers. But, she doesn't know that. She just knows she has money. Soon Geum is a kind hearted person, that's very clear from what she does with the cash: she pays for an apartment for her friend and the friend's child. She uses some of it to pay her father's hospital bills. Soon Geum even has a fantasy where she pays for herself and her friend to go to university. She has another fantasy where she pays for all her housekeeper friends to have a day of treatment at an expensive beauty parlor. Soon Geum doesn't seem to have any selfish wishes. Money is wonderful, but you can see that she plans to use her money to help those around her and have a good time.

Meanwhile. . .Gun Woo doesn't seem able to get on without money. He was a sweetheart when he was younger, but now - without Grandmother to put him in his place - he's loud and angry. Seriously, he's always yelling at Soon Geum and his family. I understand he's angry at them, and he has a right to be angry at his parents. . .but. . .he needs to tone it down.

As for the other housekeepers, we're seeing just how easily they can fall apart over money. They win 50 dollars and turn on each other. Da Kyum tells the other housekeepers Soon Geum shouldn't get any of the 50 dollars, because she wasn't there last week. Hyun Joo (who recently pretended to be rich to buy all the other housekeepers crab, bought lipstick for one of the other housekeepers, and seems to know that Soon Geum's winning lottery ticket was the housekeepers winning lottery ticket) protests. Da Kyum then explains that Hyun Joo didn't have money last week, so she shouldn't get any of the fifty dollars either. And, oh. . .since it happened at her house, she should get the most. Da Kyum! You're so adorable with Young Hee, but you have a selfish side when it comes to money. Even if three housekeepers split the 50, it's still 16 dollars! One of the other housekeepers mentioned that Da Kyum ran away from home, so I'm wondering if she grew up very poor, and that's why she wanted that money. Or, maybe we'll be shocked. . .and find out she grew up middle class or higher.

Meanwhile, I think I'm shipping the wrong couple - Soon Geum and Gun Woo have had their share of cute moments, but I'm not feeling it just yet. He's always annoyed or angry with her - Jung Gyu Woon seems to always be yelling his lines. Meanwhile, Sung Yu Ri and Kim Min Joon have really wonderful chemistry and I love the interactions between their two characters. Soon Geum grew up poor, as did Young Hee; they have things in common. He teases her and she seems to enjoy her time around him. They're cute. I'm wrong shipping! I'm sure it will all end with Soon Geum/Gun Woo and Young Hee/Da Kyum. . .but, until Gun Woo goes back to being a sweet man and until Da Kyum matures - I'm going with Young Hee and Soon Geum.

romance town, drama that is awesome
