Summary: A twelve year old girl finds a magical kingdom in the woods.
I. Intro
I was twelve years old when I stumbled along my kingdom.
"There's no kingdom, Emily," my parents would say.
But I knew there was a kingdom. A kingdom full of magic where anything could happen. A kingdom called Isonia.
II. The Hike That Started It All
My parents were the type of parents who would live in the outdoors during summer break if they could. Me? Not so much. I was perfectly fine spending the hot summer days inside with nice air-conditioning and a television. But no matter how long I spent trying to convince my parents that being inside was a better option, they insisted that we get out of the house to do something "outdoorsy" every chance we got.
So that was how I found myself spending my first day of summer in the middle of the woods behind our property with my more than enthusiastic parents.
"This is so stupid," I groaned as I jumped over a tree trunk.
"It's only a couple of hours," my dad said causing me to groan some more. "The more you complain, the longer this will take." I didn't care. I hated the woods and I hated hiking.
"But-"
"No buts Emily," my mom said this time.
Sighing, I gave in. I shut up and quietly followed behind my parents for what seemed like hours. I was looking down, dragging my feet through the dirt as I walked.
"Mom?" I eventually said.
No reply. I looked up and no one was there. "Mom? Dad?" Still no reply. I was frantically spinning around now. I couldn't see them anywhere.
I started to run in a random direction, screaming out their names. "Mom?" I cut through the path in panic. "This isn't funny!" I screamed.
III. Lost
I was lost. Completely lost. It's been at least an hour since I realized I wasn't with my parents. Now I was just walking around, not having any idea where I was going. Every now and then I would call out my parent's names only to hear nothing in response.
I found a tree and sat down against it. I was exhausted and I had no food or water. The sun was beating down on my back and it felt like it was burning a hole in me. I sat there for a while until I was pretty sure that my back was on fire.
I was about to lose all hope of finding my parents. It's been hours and all I've done is walk around in circles. But then I saw something. It looked like an opening. I ran toward it, hoping it was the way back to the house. I came closer and realized that it wasn't my house, but an unfamiliar cottage.
IV. Isonia
I pushed the branches aside and walked through the opening. At first, the cottage was normal. It was in the far distance with nothing but grass and muddy dirt around it. But as I started walking up to it, things began to change.
The grass magically transformed into crisp clear water and an old fashioned bridge. The muddy dirt beneath my feet had transformed into a nice brown color, and the trees that surrounded me grew and grew, rising up into the sky. And the cottage. The cottage was now a castle, showing off a blue glowing color. It wasn't like anything I had ever seen.
I started walking up to the bridge taking in everything around me. I passed over the bridge and walked up to the front of the castle. Engraved into the castle doors were my initials, EG. I turned back around to see the view of my kingdom from the other side.
When I went inside the castle, I saw what I only saw in my dreams. The windows were made of crystal, and the big staircase led up to an open balcony. I went up the stairs and explored the rest of the castle.
I eventually decided to find my way home, promising to return another day. I exited the pathway, and when I did, my magical kingdom disappeared into the ordinary cottage it was when I came. I smiled, knowing I was the only one in the word who knew about this magical kingdom. The kingdom of Isonia.
