A college in Portland, WA: Saturday afternoon
It was a very good thing her mother was on the other end of the phone and not in the room with her. She certainly wasn't taking Mercy's news well.
"I just don't think being an engineer is for me. I like History better and I think I'll be happier teaching. I can make up what I'm behind in over the summer and still graduate on - "
She held the phone away from her ear and just waited till the yelling died down.
"My scholarship will cover the summer session, Mom. It's not like I need - "
More yelling. "Yes, I understand that teaching is a much maligned profession and that I'll never make the money that - "
This was going about as badly as she'd expected.
"Mom...? Mom...? Why don't - Maybe I should let you think about this a bit and -"
Wow. Ow, that was particularly shrill and painful.
"Okay, okay. Um..." She looked at the phone, listening to the dial tone. "Well... at least she knows now?"
Mercy sighed and set the phone down. Maybe she'd just take a side trip to Fandom for part of her break instead of going home.
