[After thisTo Jamie's relief, the world they have stumbled onto onto is pleasant and green - almost natural, with real nature noises going on all about them. And while Jamie's not normally one to appreciate nature, there are far worse things when you've been expecting dead demon-ray silence ( Read more... )

Helen breathes in the air, which is not as clean as it could be but much better than some places she has been, already.

"I would like a lettuce," she concedes, tucking a portion of her hair back to observe their surroundings.

"Yes, and I can see radishes," agrees Jamie, who might - just possibly, though he would never admit this - have had just enough chips in Milliways to put him off fried food for a bit.

It is habit by now- and without even a resigned sigh, Joris starts down the rows, looking over the radishes and lettuce.

It works every time.

Jamie feels ever so slightly guilty about this - but it isn't as if they're forcing Joris to go off and fetch things for them. He just does it.

He settles himself onto a patch of green grass and leans back, watching Joris searching through the gardens.

"I suppose he'll notice he's not a slave any longer in the end."

Helen folds herself down next to him, back straight as she tugs up bits of grass with her fingers.

"Not in a hundred years, at the rate he's going," she says dismissively. "If he talks about ten-foot Konstam again I shall bite him. I shan't be able to help it."

"It's not just the talk," Jamie complains, "it's the way Konstam can do no ill that gets up my nose. It can't be true. Nobody could be that tall, that brave, that strong, that considerate, and all the rest of it."

Even Piotr doesn't fit quite all that description - he's only seven or eight feet tall at the most, Jamie reckons.

Though a picture does come into his head, at that moment, of him on his rock. He must have been near ten feet tall, though it was difficult to tell, what with the chains. But Jamie doesn't like thinking about him on the rock; it always upsets him. He digs his fingers into the rich dirt, and tries to banish the image.

"Ah, but you see," Helen says, glancing over her shoulder to Jamie with a smirk, "Konstam's the Great God."

Jamie snickers appreciatively - it always does to encourage Helen when she makes jokes (the ones not at his expense, anyways.)

"I once met -" he begins.

And Jamie is a bit interrupted by radishes. And a lettuce, spring onions, and carrots.

Well, he and Helen did ask for them, so-

Considering how long it has been since Joris has even seen a garden, (it is not high on the list of things demon hunters need to know about), he is pleased that he was able to tell the difference between the carrots and radishes before he pulled them out.

Jamie puts his arms up hastily to catch the lettuce before it falls on the ground and bruises, and holds it up to the light to scrutinize it.

"That looks good!" he says, in the bright encouraging tone of a kindergarten teacher. You always feel like Joris needs over-praising somehow.

Helen stretches her left arm over, and plucks the lettuce out of his hand, before peeling off the dirty outer layers meticulously.

It is her lettuce, after all. Jamie's tone makes her roll her eyes, but she does smile a bit at Joris.

Joris just shrugs a bit, setting the rest of the vegetables down. It was easy enough.

Joris is always so pleased. And capable. It gets on one's nerves.

Which is why Jamie makes what might be one of the stupidest attempted jokes he's ever made: "Nothing but the best for the young master and mistress, eh?"

Helen has very neatly folded up a leaf of the lettuce, and taken one and a half precise bites out of it when Jamie makes his comment.

The 'half' is because her teeth are closed on the leaf, but she is so startled she just shoots a look of utter disbelief at Jamie, before her glance slides to Joris worriedly.

She swallows the piece of leaf gingerly.

...

That last bunch of carrots gets set down with more care than one usually uses with vegetables. This is to keep them from being tossed. Hard.

More than likely Jamie.

"I'm not your slave." Joris takes a deep, careful breath. "I'm Konstam's."

Jamie starts feeling terrible almost as soon as the words are out of his mouth, which makes his response twice as cross.

"I know that, you fool!" Defensive; obviously it's Joris' fault, for not asserting his own independence. "Can't you get it through your head that you're not even that any longer?"
