Ladies, gentlemen, and gender neutral vocative nouns:
I know what you're thinking. You're thinking it's been a long time since
LJ's last clusterfuck and that it's safe to go back in the water.
OH YE OF TOO MUCH FAITH.
To quote LJ itself:
Purging inactive accounts will take place...probably in late August. A journal is defined as inactive if it has not been logged into for 24 consecutive months.A community is defined as inactive if has not been updated for 24 consecutive months. Once an account is eligible to be purged for inactivity, the owner will be sent an email to alert them of the inactive status. The owner will then have two weeks to log into the journal or post to their community to prevent it from being deleted. If the owner does not log in or post, the account will be deleted and treated like any other deleted account (the owner will have 30 days to log in and undelete the account to prevent it from being purged). -- from
this news post But the part you REALLY need to look at is this:
...we also had to add logic that removed comments and community entries posted by accounts being purged. -- from
this lj_maintenance post THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A SECOND.
If you have an RP or fanfic journal that is classified as inactive, any comments or community posts you made will be gone. Even if you have only one account that is in no danger of being considered inactive, have you ever read an
old RPG? Or fanfic from an LJ user who hasn't written in years? These things are all in jeopardy.
I first learned about this through
bookshop's
post. At the moment, there is not any kind of organized response, but I encourage you to reach out to LJ for some clarification/suggestions/cluebats.
Note: journals for deceased users are exempt from the purge, but only if they have Memorial status. Other than dying and having your journal declared a memorial, there does not appear any way to ensure the preservation of your content regardless of your activity level on LJ.
GODDAMN THIS FUCKING FUCKED UP SHIT.
EDIT: We have a new definition, kids! The news post now states that: A journal is defined as inactive if it has not been logged into for 24 consecutive months and has only one post (i.e., the welcome post). A community is defined as inactive if has not been updated for 24 consecutive months and has only one entry and no comments.
It is not clear if 1) the comments to be counted include comments left elsewhere than the journal in question (ex. RP accounts) or 2) how the content of journals that have already been deleted will be affected.
