[Ray is very obviously in the wastes, sitting on a rock, with a small pile of dead wildlife (mostly killer rabbits) at his feet. He doesn't say anything for a long moment, just picks up one of the rabbits, and begins skinning it with practiced ease. The observant may notice he doesn't look like he slept last night. Finally, he says quietly,They ( Read more... )

not the only card player, he has his priorities, strangely prepared for this, playing the cards, character development, the necessities of life, damn you jean louis, effieciancy first, the things i regret, thinking ahead, in interest of full disclosure, hunting & skinning

[Hardly the subtlety required of an assassin, to announce it openly. Still, it lets him know such a person is potentially available - for the right price or the right reason or whatever it would take if Nakago were to decide to use Ray.]

You are brave to come forward.

It's not bravery. The information has been used against me once before here, I do not wish that to be so a second time.

[That is different; a choice he'd likely make himself: forced into it, it may as well be on his terms. Recoup as much as possible from the loss.]

Prudent, then.

I always endeavor to be.

[He's noticed the rabbits, of course, and turns the subject to them now.]

You hunt.

A relic of my childhood. It's served me well here.

[Childhood, no; he could almost laugh at the idea. His childhood had not allowed for that. But he'd learned it as a practical skill for time spent on campaign, or in the wilderness, as member of the army. And of course, as Ray said, here.]

Do you hunt with weaponry or snares?

And do you know much about tanning?

[His mouth turns upward in a smile.]

Both. However, I am no tanner.

I've found snares more effective here. Less time consuming.

Pity. Neither am I. It was a skill my father never got around to teaching me.

I suppose it would be in demand here. But I've never found it necessary to learn for myself.

Ah well. I know the theory, of course, but acquiring sufficient salt has thus far been a problem.

How much is required?

Handful or so per hide. But if I had that, I'd prefer to use it for preserving meat.

Clothing, at least, seems to be available anyway. [His tone, however, suggests he doesn't think much of most of it; what's left to be picked over tends to be either worthless for anything but rags, or certainly not sturdy enough to be worthwhile.]

Leather and pelts have uses beyond clothing. And even as such, they'd be better than much I've found here.
