And Lo, A Post

I had the great opportunity to go to the Shenandoah National Park a few weeks ago, along with the lovely and entertaining brown-eyed girl. Sometimes getting away for a bit can make you focus on the good things in life. Like mountain springs, and grassy meadows, and nights spent talking by nice warm fire.

Sometimes you get a chance to view the world below in ways that you don't normally:

The brown-eyed girl remarked it was almost like looking at a model-train village. Which is a neat thought.

I'm reminded of that in a way that I was talking to the brown-eyed girl tonight.

I was recounting a story about going to subway at lunch today. I was waiting in a rather long line, that's going a bit slowly at lunch and this girl in front of me gets her sandwich.

The guy says "you want the combo?"

She says "yes," then she says "how much is the combo again?"

He says $5.04

I think that was more than she planned on spending for lunch because she seems a little annoyed. But she hands her credit card in and the dude is trying to push through and serve the line, so he's multitasking a bit. Subway's credit card processor prints two receipts, so she signs the first and gets handed the second while he is getting my change by now and the girl "pockets" the signed one. The cashier dude looks back up, looks at the unsigned one for a second - then says "miss" - "miss" (she's sitting now) - "you need to sign this one" and she gets really huffy about the whole thing. First you lie and then you get annoyed when caught.

If I ever have kids, or mentor kids, I want to teach that they have to be honest in the little things - even if that totally sucks sometimes. It seems easier to give back the $100 or $200 sometimes if you get it by mistake or find it - rather than the $20 or even the $2. Character is about giving back that $20

Sometimes it doesn't matter which path you take. The little thing is to take either one.

sometimes you might even find you can get close to things you never thought possible:

You don't have to have the bird's eye view. Or be king.

I used to think a lot that I wanted to be king, or really close to king - because by being king I could impart all my foundational beliefs and do great things and MAKE A DIFFERENCE and lots of other touchy-feely things

and then I realized

that grilled cheese sandwiches are great for dinner

no, kidding

they are great anytime

especially if you make them for or with a friend

the little things make a difference.
