Huh. They finally sent me somethin' else?

[Bright blue light? That isn't good. The last time he saw light like that, it was a True Rune going nuts and building up to kill everyone. Normally? This would prompt him to run the other way, buuuut since it seems to be just outside...

If it even was that, he'd still be in the blast radius.

So, here's to investigating what just woke him up instead. Caesar peers out from the front door, but that's as far as he goes until Balin answers the most important question of the day.]

Hey. You aren't about to explode, are you?

Goddamn, I hope not.

[Don't give Mayfield ideas, Caesar. Please don't give Mayfield ideas.]

[It's a really valid question to ask, okay? And he had been hoping for a yes or a no on that, but that will have to do.

He leaves the house and wanders down to the mailbox, to where Balin is.]

So what was that?

[Still kind of shuddering from the pain. Migraines suck, especially migraines induced from Logos Element overload. That picture of the Golden Ratio is still next to him.]

It was-Mayfield gave me back my "tabula." I think. Fuckers-made me learn every Element I had back home. All over again.

Fuckin' son of a bitch I can't see straight.

[That picture is getting one hell of a side-eye.]

A tabula? [Well, so long as it isn't one of the runes.] Here, let's get you back inside.

[He'll offer a hand up if it's needed -- though that will be a laugh, considering Caesar isn't exactly strong -- and he'll even help drag Balin back towards the house if he has to.]

[Not knowing whether the picture will be important to keep, he grabs and picks it up from the ground before accepting Caesar's help to stand up. Better hold on tight!]

Yeah, it's a-remember that Receptive crap I told you about? It's tied to'at. All'a Logos Elements we learn-it's encoded onto it.

[And up! Aaaand...] ...geez, you're heavy. [But he's up, that's what counts! Just ignore the struggle it was.]

Not really. Is the long story short that you have whatever it was having Logos Elements gave you back now?

[He looks a little uneasy and is still holding a hand to his head, gritting his teeth some.]

... Yeah. It ain't supposed'a be like that. Fuckin' town-did it all at once.

[Caesar will start leading him back up the drive and towards the door.]

Sounds painful. [Captain Obvious, right here.] What are they used for?

[Letting Caesar guide him back into the house. He can't see all that straight right now, and is constantly squinting his eyes.]

Anything an' everything if you know how to use 'em right-it's a system for affectin'a universe.

Like-one of'a basic things we learn? How to discharge lightning.

You can throw lightning around?

[They'll be in the house in another moment or two, all he has to do is shove the door open. Thankfully, he'd left it ajar.]

Sounds like magic to me.

[Once inside, Balin will try and make his way to the couch. Probably the best place for him right now. Stairs would be a challenge.]

I can, yeah-pretty useful for my line of work. Not every Receptive bothers with trainin' in it, though. Depends a lot on what their career path's got.

[Once he's sitting down, he'll lean back, rubbing the side of his forehead and trying not to open his eyes too much.]

But-yeah, I guess magic's'a best way to explain Logos-all'a guys who do Logos research an' development, they'd tell me that'a Eloh developed it after they discovered a grand unified theory or two. You know-scientific inquiry.

But hey, wizards do'a same thing in a lot of stories, right? Libraries full'a spellbooks an' shit-I guess it's'a same thing.

[With Balin safely on the couch, Caesar will take over his usual chair nearby and kick his heels up on the edge of the coffee table.]

I guess? I don't really read stories like that. Magic in our world is derived from runes. If you have a rune affinity, you can pick it up, though not everyone is limited to just certain affinities. I suppose that's where the 'wizards with libraries' part could come in.

It might not be too far off from what Logos and Receptives are.

walking_nuke September 14 2011, 02:31:52 UTC
... Maybe, if you switch'a "rune affinity" for "havin'a right genes." An' it's not so restricted-if you're a Receptive. In theory, that is.

In practice, well-they can't teach everyone everything. Just like with-normal military stuff, you gotta pick'a MOS.

[He realizes that he's never explained that acronym to anyone in Mayfield, using it out of habit.]

Uh-military occupational specialty.

commentboxtroll September 16 2011, 02:05:31 UTC
I see. So, is everyone in your military one of these Receptives?

[An army of lightning throwing bombers would be... interesting.]

Reply

walking_nuke September 16 2011, 02:08:17 UTC
... Not everyone-no. But when Earth fell-they tried rescuin' as many people with Receptive genes as'ey could.

An' Receptives tend to get higher priority for medical purposes.

[Looking a bit somber there, despite the migraine he's fending off.]

So eventually it might wind up like'at.
