[ACTION (In and Around Goldberg Street, Afternoon, OPEN TO ALL)]
[In the 50's, the Postman still delivers on Saturdays! Balin heads out of 847 Goldberg Street to check the mail-and, after opening the mailbox and retrieving what's inside, sees that it's a package in his name.]
Huh. They finally sent me somethin' else?
[In a inglorious fashion,

If it even was that, he'd still be in the blast radius.
So, here's to investigating what just woke him up instead. Caesar peers out from the front door, but that's as far as he goes until Balin answers the most important question of the day.]
Hey. You aren't about to explode, are you?

[Don't give Mayfield ideas, Caesar. Please don't give Mayfield ideas.]

He leaves the house and wanders down to the mailbox, to where Balin is.]
So what was that?
Reply
It was-Mayfield gave me back my "tabula." I think. Fuckers-made me learn every Element I had back home. All over again.
Fuckin' son of a bitch I can't see straight.
Reply
A tabula? [Well, so long as it isn't one of the runes.] Here, let's get you back inside.
[He'll offer a hand up if it's needed -- though that will be a laugh, considering Caesar isn't exactly strong -- and he'll even help drag Balin back towards the house if he has to.]

Yeah, it's a-remember that Receptive crap I told you about? It's tied to'at. All'a Logos Elements we learn-it's encoded onto it.
Reply
Not really. Is the long story short that you have whatever it was having Logos Elements gave you back now?
Reply
... Yeah. It ain't supposed'a be like that. Fuckin' town-did it all at once.
Reply
Sounds painful. [Captain Obvious, right here.] What are they used for?
Reply
Anything an' everything if you know how to use 'em right-it's a system for affectin'a universe.
Like-one of'a basic things we learn? How to discharge lightning.

[They'll be in the house in another moment or two, all he has to do is shove the door open. Thankfully, he'd left it ajar.]
Sounds like magic to me.
Reply
I can, yeah-pretty useful for my line of work. Not every Receptive bothers with trainin' in it, though. Depends a lot on what their career path's got.
[Once he's sitting down, he'll lean back, rubbing the side of his forehead and trying not to open his eyes too much.]
But-yeah, I guess magic's'a best way to explain Logos-all'a guys who do Logos research an' development, they'd tell me that'a Eloh developed it after they discovered a grand unified theory or two. You know-scientific inquiry.
But hey, wizards do'a same thing in a lot of stories, right? Libraries full'a spellbooks an' shit-I guess it's'a same thing.
Reply
I guess? I don't really read stories like that. Magic in our world is derived from runes. If you have a rune affinity, you can pick it up, though not everyone is limited to just certain affinities. I suppose that's where the 'wizards with libraries' part could come in.
It might not be too far off from what Logos and Receptives are.
Reply
In practice, well-they can't teach everyone everything. Just like with-normal military stuff, you gotta pick'a MOS.
[He realizes that he's never explained that acronym to anyone in Mayfield, using it out of habit.]
Uh-military occupational specialty.
Reply
[An army of lightning throwing bombers would be... interesting.]

An' Receptives tend to get higher priority for medical purposes.
[Looking a bit somber there, despite the migraine he's fending off.]
So eventually it might wind up like'at.
