Thoughts after three episodes of Arrow

1) As everyone else has said, the writing on this show is pretty dreadful, the performances are fairly decent, and the action is fantastic. Which puts it ahead of a lot of kung fu movies I have loved.

2) The second episode was a huge step down in quality. If the third hadn’t brought it back, I’d probably have given up on the show.

3) My favourite characters right now are Diggle and Felicity Smoak (who the internet tells me is recurring, not just a one-shot). Unfortunately, their positions in the plot pretty much guarantee that one or both of them will be killed to give Ollie more angst at some point in the near future.

4) How has nobody asked why there was a tattoo parlour on this purportedly abandoned island yet? Seriously, Ollie is surrounded by supposedly non-dumb people, he’s been examined by doctors, and nobody brought it up?

5) If I had to choose one of the main cast to disappear, and then reappear a year later having spent the intervening time becoming a kung fu master with sonic superpowers and her own florist’s shop, it would be Laurel. Girl is boring.

6) Deadshot’s lack of pornstache remains galling, but as mentioned above, it was a good episode. Still, like the folks at Afterelton pointed out, why does a master marksman poison his bullets when he’s putting two of them in his target’s heart? It seems like overkill.

7) Colin Salmon can do no wrong. And I can’t believe they kicked him off Strictly Come Dancing. He’d just got his hips into the game, and he looked incredible in a dinner jacket.

We get the fourth episode tomorrow night. I’m looking forward to it.
