Last Saturday, Kelley and I went to Lexington, Massachusetts to see
Amanda Palmer and a group of high school students perform a play they had written and produced together called "With The Needle That Sings In Her Heart." It was inspired by Neutral Milk Hotel's album, "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea." The play was about Anne Frank coping with being in a concentration camp. It was very complicated and very moving and I'm still sort of digesting the whole thing. I don't think I "got" all of it but I'll tell you one thing: I have never been so impressed by a high school production in my whole life. And it wasn't just Amanda's influence. These kids were really good at their acting craft. The director at their school must have some amazing skills. We might have had a few people who were that good when I was in high school, but most weren't, including myself. I got to talk to one of the girls in the cast after the play and tell her how proud I was of all of them for writing, producing, and acting in such a skilled and moving production.
This was my seventh time meeting Amanda Palmer. We hung around while she was chatting with people after the play. She's so wonderful about talking with people who want to connect with her. She focuses her attention completely and entirely on whoever she's talking to at any particular moment. I don't think many celebrities do that. She poses for pictures, holds hands, signs autographs, and practically anything else people ask her to do.
So I waited a while to get to chat with her since
kschap and I weren't in any particular hurry to leave and there were probably people there who hadn't met her before, who deserved to have priority. She finally got around to me, smiled hugely, crouched down, and said, "It's great to see you! How have you been?" or something similar to that. I'm always sort of surprised she remembers me from one time to the next so I said, "I'm pretty great, you remember me?" She takes my hand and says, "Of course I remember you, you're unforgettable." So we chat a few minutes, she signs stuff for me and Kelley, and then goes on to talk to the last few people standing around.
I tell Kelley, "I think I'm going to ask her for a hug once she's done talking to everyone else." So we move out of the way, wait for a few minutes, and catch her when she's about to leave. I say, "I wondered, could I ask you for a hug?" She says, "Fuck yeah!" and grabs me and hugs me tight. Then, completely unexpectedly, she kisses me smack on the right side of the neck. I think I might have levitated out of my wheelchair for a couple seconds, I was so elated. I managed to say, "Oh my god, you're so sweet!" in a voice that was much higher than normal for me and we went on our way.
I think I'll always be blown away that I got kissed by Amanda Palmer!
