AMVs

Just for fun, here's a collection of my favorite AMVs from Sakura Con this year. There were some good ones. ^_^

There was an Utena video! Yay! It didn't win anything, but I appreciated the story telling and that someone is still thinking of Utena. It's a drama video focusing on Miki and Kozue's relationship.

Ah yes, that was the most challenging part for me! I searched and searched and I could not find very good matches for the fabrics from Gankutsuou. Sometimes I'd get lucky - like I found a pretty good match for the pants in a sheer home décor fabric that I layered over white cotton. But the only way I figured out to do the coat was hand painting the whole pattern. I made some stencils and bought letter stencils to help. Although I found the edges didn't come out smooth with the stencils, so I had to go back and refine them free hand. I used the "lumiere" line of fabric paints by Jacquard. I think I ordered some online, but I've seen them in plenty of fabric stores too. They have kind of a neat metallic sheen to them and go on smoothly. I didn't copy all the shapes in the pattern of the coat because it was hard to see all the details from pictures. So I just made stencils of a couple shapes and painted them onto red fabric with a little brighter shade of red. The base fabric I used was kind of a black red. After that dried I painted the letters on in the gold paint. I also used random blobs and swishes of paint on the brown facing fabric. Although it would be cool to research marbleizing techniques and really match the look more than what I did. =) I also painted the cuff fabrics with random colors of gold, bronze and dark red. Then I layered a sheer reddish goldish fabric on top of the cuffs to give it more depth. I used the same technique for the epaulets and added a decorative stitch with my serger to the edges of the fringe pieces.

So, that was very long winded, but I think that's the best way I discovered to match Gankutsuou fabrics: hand painting and using some layers of sheer fabrics if needed. Good luck! You're taking on a big task for your friend! I spent hours and hours hand painting that darn jacket. I was so glad when it was done. XD If you have any other questions, let me know and I'd love to see a picture of your finished product!

(Hahaha commented in the wrong place. Go me!)

Okay, cool! :D I thought I'd probably end up painting it. I'll probably either go the stencil route or I might try to make stamps by cutting the designs out of felt or something similar and gluing the felt to a piece of wood. I'm also loving the idea of layering with sheer fabrics-- didn't think of that!

You've been super-helpful, and I'll definitely get pictures of the finished product to show you. Thank you so much!
