Absolutely not! I once wrote an entire paper without being quite sure what my thesis was, and I ended up getting a 72%, and the comments "though you have a clear thesis to your paper, you might want to work on articulating it into a proper thesis statement..."
That was pretty much what my Canadian Studies paper last year consisted of - no thesis. AHEM. And my TA didn't even notice. You don't need a thesis to get a good mark.
