If I had to pick a favorite song of this year that was actually, you know, FROM this year, it would be this. I have a feeling it will be a summertime standard for me.

I first heard it this summer and that was when I fell in love with it. What it reminds me of most now, though, is visiting Brendan in October. As we drove his sisters to the airport to head back to Pennsylvania, the mood was a little somber, the way it often is at the end of a trip.

Everyone reacted when this song started. I turned the radio up loud and we all sang along, driving through downtown Durham with the windows down and this going at top-volume. For a few minutes, none of us were sad.

It was a nice day.

This song also reminds me of my drive to Indiana. I remember being on a quiet stretch of Tennessee highway and sitting up a little straighter as this song began. I was on top of the world on that drive, best mood I've ever been on during a road trip. The sun was shining and I was making good time. It was ridiculous, how nice I felt that afternoon. I had no idea what was coming.

Brendan and his sisters on the Duke University campus on that beautiful October day. As I told them at the time, they're my favorite family I ever pretended to belong to in order to troll a drunk person.
