Hurry Up & Wait

Is it just me, or are there not enough minutes in the day?

Oh there are plenty of hours... but I always seem to run out of minutes. Somehow, sometimes things take longer than I think they will, or lead to other things that need to be done in order to finish the first thing & by the time you've finished what you were originally doing, you wonder how it took nearly 10 minutes to simply put 2 items in the freezer - after failing to fit them in, taking out 2 drawers, finding both the drawers & the shelves covered in too much ice, chipping it away & running hot water over the (now emptied) drawers, replacing them, putting everything back, including the original 2 items... then returning to the dining room & wondering how your dinner lost its heat after surely only 2 minutes away...

Nearly every day, I end up running for the bus that I know leaves just before 7.30am, but somehow there's always something that delays my departure by that crucial couple of minutes - The cats don't want to go outside, so they play hide'n'seek... or I can't find my phone/keys/wallet/iPod when I swear they were on the shelf last I looked... or there's a last-minute chore that has to be done NOW, not when I get home that evening... & before I know it, I'm working up a sweat in the middle of winter running the 350 metres to the bus stop. And it can be even worse if I'm driving to work - I always think I can fit all those little things in before I leave, because surely the traffic won't be too bad today??? Of course it is... In fact, it's worse

Sometimes it happens when I'm not even really doing anything... I'm reading stuff on the 'net, or just playing solitaire, or editing some photos... & you'd be amazed how fast the time jumps from 2pm to 2.45 in only 20 minutes...

It could be that time is maliciously elastic, because I'm at work today & have been here since 9am for the last 5 hours... make that only 3 hours - it's just after midday! And have you ever noticed how the last 30 minutes at work can take an hour & a half?

It can't just be me - there have been so many songs written about time... & its tendency to speed up, slow down, or get away entirely:

Pink Floyd
Joe Jackson
Steve Miller Band
The Bangles
Neil Young
Queen
Harry Chapin

To name a few...

time, life - don't talk to me about life, personally speaking
