So, my last post was a fairly whiny one about how I don't have any RL fandom friends and about how I wanted to go to Escapade 2013 but didn't want to go without knowing anyone there in advance. Since then, several excellent things have happened.
1. I found a Meetup group nearby to me, and they happened to be having a meetup three days later.
2. I went to the meetup and had a great time!
3. Many of those meetup people were going to Escapade.
4. I registered for Escapade, found roommates, and found a rideshare down.
5. I WENT TO ESCAPADE! And had a great time!
So, all things excellent. And this is the resultant half-assed con report (written while half-sloshed.... yay!).
One, the first: My roommates were excellent. There was an unfortunate snoring incident, but that's what earplugs are for, y/y? We had a great time chatting, mostly about SG1 fic, so I've got some excellent recs to reinvigorate my interest in SG1.
Two, the second: Everyone at Escapade was great. The panels were fun, with a good mix of fandom-specific topics (including one on sports rpf!!!) and meta topics. And whenever I didn't feel like going to any of the panels in a time slot, I would head to the Con Suite and have a great time chatting with whoever was there about things like fingering and non-con and Teen Wolf. Good times :) And there was excellent food as well.
Three, the third: I made a hockey friend,
burnishdvictory!! Yay! But who of course lives half a continent away from me *headdesk*. We had a wonderful watching party for the Blackhawks-Sharks game, and had lots of fun with the Chicago broadcast.
Of course it wasn't all perfect - I have unfortunate introvert tendencies, and the fact that whenever you put two fangirls in a room together intense conversation breaks out was a little overwhelming for me. But I took some introvert time, and once
burnishdvictory and I went out to frolic in the waves and walk on the pier, so all in all it was pretty manageable. It's also really clear that folks have really strong friendships, and given the history of the con, they've known each other sometimes for 20+ years. That was a little intimidating, but still everyone was very welcoming. And it definitely helped to already know some people going in.
The con ended with the Dead Dog party, and a whole bunch of us had a great time watching Teen Wolf - it's so much more fun when you're in a group conversing about how Scott can really only have one thought at a time or about Stiles' lips and hands. It's great! We should have fannish watching parties all the time! Maybe then I would actually finish a series I start.....
And that is my con report. so there.
