Closeness to public transportation:
-An 8-10 minute walk to the bus stop (bus is free w/ Cal ID)
-Also 10 minute walk to BART (Grocery store & shopping center is next to the BART)

Rent is $740 per person ($1440 total), plus some utilities. I think we paid a deposit of $1000, plus first and last month's rent when we moved in.

Utilities depend on the season, because Californians don't use heat at all most of the year. The place is a house, rented as two apartments; utilities are split 60/40 with the upstairs (we pay 40%); phone is very cheap ($6/month universal lifeline service) and the place is wired for two lines should you be interested.

Cable- We have digital cable (i.e. BBC, HBO, Starz, Showtime) through the upstairs people (who are very nice and quiet - she only wants to charge us $10/month for the box b/c she figures that she'd be forking out the cash for 4 boxes upstairs anyway, but we'll probably give her a little more). Without the box, basic sucky cable naturally flows through the lines, which is good because you can't get anything other than UPN and ABC with an antenna.

Pets- Although the landlord is a very friendly hippie architect who would probably let you have a pet, none of us have pets. I hate cat hair and would freak if I had to deal with having it on my black clothes, plus all of my friends are severely allergic and would never come over if I had a cat. The upstairs people do have a puppie that they're trying to get rid of. The dog mostly hangs out in the fenced in backyard or in its cage in the garage (they don't allow it in the house). Nice dog, but very exuberant.

Misc Other Info
-Free onsite laundry in the garage.
-Very nice, very cool landlord who is an architect/contractor who went to school at Cal.
-Upstairs people have DSL, so if you wanted it, you could probably work out something with them.
-The kitchen is huge, especially by Bay area standards.
-There's a 10'X12' deck that extends off of the living room, plus Amelia would leave her grill.
-Hardwood floors in living room and one bedroom, other bedroom is carpeted.
-Built in-bookcases in the bedrooms.
-Free double bed if you want it, and Amelia wants to leave her couch.
-Lots of cupboard space + a small pantry.

Move-in Date is very flexible. Amelia & I are expecting to pay rent through August 15th. Amelia is gone all summer & just sucking up the rent, so her room should be empty as of May 24th. I'm teaching summer school, so I am there right up until the 15th, but will probably begin moving stuff at the beginning of August. Also, we have a mailbox @ the local Mailboxes, so if you wanted to ship packages to it, you'd have a safe address to send them to and people to sign for them and protect them ;)

Overall, we really do have the nicest apartment of anyone we know.

It's about 20 minutes from campus by bus or BART, in a nice, quiet neighborhood with a pleasant view of the Bay from the deck. If you have (or want) a car, you can park on the street without having to deal with bullshit Berkeley permits and other parking restrictions. This why everyone comes to our house. The living room is large, the kitchen is large, the bedrooms are fairly large. Currently three of us live in the place and have plenty of room for all our stuff.

Also, I'm sure that you've already heard this, but landlords tend to be completely insane here - trying to rent compete shitholes for a lot of money and grossly misdescribing apartments. When I was hunting for a place, I was very close to renting a different apartment for $1750/month - YES, $310 more per month - and given what I had seen up until that time, that apt seemed like a total bargain. BUT, the $1750/month people didn't get back to me right away, so in my state of heightened paranoia I kept going to open houses and happened upon this much cheaper, much nicer apartment - and managed to charm Alfred into renting it to me ;)

Sorry for the long sales pitch, but as Pliny would say, it's not that I am verbose, it's that my description reflects the size and grandeur of the apartment ;)

The place really is very nice, and the area even more so. Gorgeous view off the balcony. And that really is a good price for Berkeley, believe me, plus the hassle-saver of not having to find a place.

I'm interested -- at least intersted enough to want to know more. Primarily I'm concerned about distance (I don't have a car and so I bike everywhere) and about money (I have no idea what the cost of living is like in Berkeley, do you think that it is reasonable to expect to pay a rent that is that high while living exclusively on departmental money?).

Maybe we should continue this by email. I try to keep my real name out of this journal (although I think I've forgotten exactly why that is), but I think that you know it from the departmental announcement concerning new students. My email address is my first initial and last name @wesleyan.edu. If you'd rather talk over the phone, you can email me your phone number and I'll call whenever is convenient for you.
