So an aussie singer by the name of Ben Lee kicked off his american release tour of a new album last night. He traditionally picks Santa Barbara, for some reason, this time at a little club called SoHo, tucked down a back alley and up a staircase on State Street. (apparently every time, Oprah's been on the guest list, but has always been too busy to attend... she lives somewhere in the SB area.)
long story short, I've now a signed Ben Lee Ticket stub and CD.
There was between 50-70 people at the show, which made for an awesome set... the audience was quiet enough that he could step away from the microphone, unplug his accustic guitar, and still play and sing loud enough for the whole room to hear him. It was an awesome effect. Also cool: Ben walking through the audience while playing "We're all in this together" and inviting the audience to sing along. He had one guy accompanying him, and they played without a set list. it was pretty nifty when Ben said, "oh, you've never done that one? ok, here's what you do;" and they then played the song really well. That only happened the once, though there were a couple other songs Nick (the guitarist/pianist) hadn't performed publicly before. Good times.
I also went with a couple Canadian girls I ran into while working at Rocco's. They're from Vancouver origionally, one's working here at the four seasons, the other is living off tree-planting money and visitng her friend. from what they told me about seeing a Tragically Hip show in LA a couple weeks ago at the House of Blues, I'm determined that the best way to see any band is on an overseas tour away from their home fan-base. Though seeing the Tea Party play the Ex. in Ottawa a few years ago was awesome, seeing the lead man in a solo act in Perth with an audience of a hundred fifty was just as awesome though in different ways.
Elsewise, life rolls on. I've gotten two good comments from customers at the call center; there's a white board where the supervisors post such comments for each month. the fact I've got my name up there twice already (once for the 28th, and again for yesterday) is pretty awesome. also cool is the evaluation I had done today, hitting 100% accuracy for how things are supposed to be done. (You know how most times before talking to an operator, "your call may be monitored for quality purposes"? that's what might be happening. Your operator won't know if they're being monitored or not.) so regardless I'm feeling good about the job. the pizza place continues to be a late-night pizza place. and all that entails.
ben lee,
