Head canon

Like all Soul Eater villains - big or small - not much information is ever provided about them, except for the occasional verbal back story-fillers. Gopher, one of the most minor SE villains, has absolutely nothing going for him. There isn't anything that even resembles character development on his part for the past fifteen thirty-five chapters...

♥ Soul Eater canon has yet to show that Asura's insanity has any influence on Gopher that isn't already innately present within him. Therefore, my Gopher is unaffected by madness the way that other people are - to a certain degree, however.

To start with, resistance to madness is found in a number of ways:
  • The fail-safe way to be resistant to madness is to already to be insane yourself. This is seen with Giriko, whose 800 years of blood lust has rendered him immune to both Arachne's wavelength and Asura's wavelength, even though it infected everyone else and nearly caused them to lose their minds. Another example is Noah, whose intense amount of insanity combined with his extremely powerful abilities allows him to brush off Asura's wavelength as "a gentle breeze".
  • Maka's soul carries an anti-demon wavelength, which acts as a powerful defense against madness.
  • Black Star is shown to be immune to Arachne's insanity wavelength due to his courage, willpower, and strong heart.
  • Harvar is one of the few supporting characters who wasn't infected by insanity (in fact, he wasn't even aware that the madness was spreading), which Kilik explains is largely attributed to his emotionless personality.
  • Justin Law was theoretically someone who was supposed to have a great deal of resistance to insanity, as hypothesized by Stein. His resistance was a trait that he developed due to his faith in Shinigami -- however, it ultimately backfired, as faith can go both ways - it can be strong, holy, and pure - as well as zealous, maddening, and obsessive.
My personal theory is that Gopher's immunity comes from the first and last points. Like Giriko, he is already insane with his extremely strong obsession with Noah, so that the Kishin's madness wavelength has little effect on him. Unlike Justin, who once had a pure faith in Shinigami, Gopher's worship of Noah has always bordered insane and could not possibly be twisted into something more negative. However, whereas Giriko had 800 years of insanity to solidify his resistance, Gopher has far less experience with being crazy which means he's still capable of being infected by insanity if exposed to it in a very close proximity.

♥ Despite common conceptions, Gopher is in fact not sexually attracted to Noah. His love and obsession towards his master is in more of a religious context than a erotic one. Gopher wants to be accepted and loved by Noah in both an emotional and physical sense - but not a sexual one. (Or more so, he doesn't understand what sex would ensue or the value of it in a relationship, seeing as Noah himself never expressed any interest in that sort of thing.) Humorously enough, Gopher actually has trouble grasping the concept of sex or the connotations behind it and mostly views sexual acts as a vile or unnecessary act far too beneath him to participate in.

♥ Noah created Gopher's body out of ink from the Book of Eibon.

♥ Gopher isn't incapable of making friends nor is he a jerk to everybody who isn't Noah. His disgust and aggression towards most people stems from his paranoia that they're either his rivals for Noah's affection or are enemies of Noah and his plans. However, if he happens to meet someone who is in no way connected to Noah, Gopher can at least act civil towards them, if not somewhat tolerate their presence depending on the amount of patience they have for him (and amount of verbal abuse they're willing to suffer). When there isn't a NOAH-SAMA or canonmates around, Gopher falls back to the default personality that he demonstrated back when he debut - one of quiet loyalty and reserve. He becomes polite, helpful, and sometimes even feign compassion or muster up scraps of sympathy - although he still does hold a general air of distance to him. The civility is definitely part of his personality - it just only makes up, like, 20% of the whole thing. Underneath it all, Gopher is a resentful, jealous, bitter, obsessed, love-struck blob that holds grudges easily.
