hist. 21 Research Journal entry #8

today i spent my time looking up new books to be used as sources in my paper. first i located the Eric Foner book about Reconstruction. it's a big book so obviously has a lot of information that i'll have to sort through, but at this point it isn't what i'm looking for. i'm trying to focus my efforts specifically on the general hypotheses for the purpose of religion in society. this has become apparent in the writing of my essay that a majority of the space for the paper will be invested more into this topic than the much narrower test case of the racial division of southern protestant churches.

as a result, i have come across several books that could lean towards philosophy, but seem like they will be very helpful in trying to give any sort of comprehensive argument for the purpose of religion. the big three that i have chosen to be the core of my paper for this immense topic are: Reconstruction of Religion by Ellwood, Christianity and the Social Crisis by Rauschenbusch, and Revivals, Awakenings, and Reforms by McLoughlin.

As we previously discussed, my final format will start with a preface to the Sean Taylor tragedy, then lead into the test case of the racially divided southern churches, then dive into the great purpose of religion discussion, and finally my own complicated conclusions that i've drawn from all of this research with a brief reference to my personal experience with the death of Sean Taylor.
