Well, I have started speaking english again. I am sitting in the lobby of the Al Manar hotel in Amman with three other CIEE students. We are just chilling, chatting, across the way a group of Jordanian women yell noisely into cell phones. This morning I awoke to the sounds of a verbal conflict inside of a family, naturally, I didn't understand any of it. Needless to say it was very interesting. On the whole though I feel very welcome here in Jordan, yesterday someone wondered if I was Iraqi, another stopped to ask me how to get to the local hospital. Back at the hotel all the desk workers were curious about where I would be studying, and living and etc. I haven't heard from my high school friend, but perhaps he doesn't check his email all that often.
On a more amusing note I heard a rendition of 'our house' put into arabic to sell maxwell house. I also saw an advertisement for skin whitening cream, it started with a women dreaming about becoming a news anchor, than as she finally achieved her dream all of the fellow staff (men) pointed at her face, she looked crestfallen but perked up when discovered a product that could turn her skin whiter, the next scene shows her finishing up a broadcast and everyone clapping her hands and one man looking dreamily at her, than it closes on her face and mentions 'white'.
Very interesting indeed.
On other note I saw a youngster with bright red hair and pale skin running around the streets of Amman as well.
Oh well, hope all is well,
Whittaker
