What do you mean about "first day of school"? In my uni there is an international students welcome programme. It's one week before the actual start of term, sort of a freshers introduction and orientation programme for new international students with information about the campus, courses, local information, travel advice, financial advice and so on, as well as practical things like helping you open a bank account, student registration, computer registration etc. before the local and 'older' students get there and it all becomes insanely busy. THere should be a letter in the next week or so that will give you details about that.
If there isn't an international students programme, the first day of school will be student registration and freshers fayre (student clubs advertising themselves and so on, as well as lots of freebies from local and national stores and companies yay). Usually that's a few days or sometimes 1 week (called week zero at my uni) before the term/teaching/classes actually start in week one. As I said, more information will be sent to you in the next few weeks so don't worry :) And they will be on the uni website anyway.
