I just got in from filling out an application and putting down a deposit for an apartment in December. I know December is a ways off but I wanted to get it taken care of now so it's one less thing I have to worry about.

I'll be living in Traver Knoll on the north side of town - less than 3 miles from where I work. It's going to be nice not to have to screw with US-23 and 94 traffic on a daily basis. I knew this past winter when one day it took me one hour and 10 minutes to get to work that I was done living where I am now.

Of course as with everything there are pros and cons to the place I'm going to be living.

The new place will be a one bedroom versus the two bedroom I have now. This will save me $88 a month and is based on my current rent. My rent next year at the place I am now was going to go up $37 so that represents more savings. On the flip side I'm going to be losing 250 sq ft and a washer and dryer. As far as the space goes while it is nice in some ways to have the extra room, two bathrooms etc. I have to admit that a lot of the space is empty except for the closets that I stuff with shit. So I obviously need to throw some of that shit out.

Not having a washer and dryer will suck and I think its like 1.25 or 1.75 per load so that's an extra expense. I did see online though that there are these new washer and dryer combos (its all one unit) and the dryer doesn't need a vent so you just hook it into your kitchen sink and there you go. So that's always an option.

The new place includes heat so that could be a savings of up to about 60.00 a month in winter. I think some of the apartements (I know the one I looked at) had gas cooking as well so that's more savings. On the flip side my current apartment just rolled out free wi-fi.

The savings in gas though, when I last calculated would be close to a thousand dollars a year though and that is significant.

So anyway, I'm glad to have gotten that out of the way.
