Jen,
I am extremely disappointed not to be able to join you today, your
last one with us in ASRS.
I'm hopeful that I will feel well enough to phone you later to say
goodbye in person but just in case I don't I want to make sure that
you get some personal words from me.
The move - do you remember that? "Andy's Girlfriend is able to help
during the move to Saltisford." - I remember telling the team as we
were all inwardly groaning at the thought of moving not only us but
all the files all the way down The Hill and we didn't have Ann!
It was an event with the potential to be a catastrophe. Not only were
you a godsend in helping to move and re-home those files but you
adapted yourself to virtually everything asked of you including
relaying a message to me from The Barrister during our 'shush don't
tell Marion we're using her office in Saltisford' Judicial Review
meetings. I mention this because it involves The Hill which I think
demonstrates lots of things. Well if we're honest you couldn't see me
doing that could you? Yes you're right! I would have taken the car!
(I feel sure that had I not had a car I would have found another way
not to have to walk back up The Hil).
So your brief career with ASRS came to an end. The move was over. The
files were filed and I hope I conveyed at the time how truly grateful
I was, we all were, for your help.
The move was not a catastrophe. It went without hitch. I had my
Cheery Chappies - Andy, Andy's Girlfriend and Laura who injected
humour and an element of fun into proceedings. It was sad to say goodbye.
Catastrophe did occur but it had nothing to do with the move. Someone
inadvisably decided to put their washing out and slipped breaking
their ankle. What can we do? Andy, always ready with a good idea, has
a plan. His Girlfriend can help out. Phew! Disaster avoided.
And so Andy's Girlfriend once again came to the rescue and sat at
Andy's old desk. Yet again, Jen you adapted yourself to all manner of
tasks and people. The Officer team are not an easy bunch of people to
work with and I know we all gave you a hard time on occasion as you
got on with the job with very little, if any, guidance from those you
were helping. Through no fault of your own you learnt by your
mistakes. Never an easy way to learn. But Jen I don't think I ever
heard you complain - you must have kept that for your walk to the
station with Andy - and you well know that everyone in ASRS is
excellent in the art of complaining - although to be fair Andy has a
fair bit of catching up to do if he's ever going to pass his GCSE in
complaining!
Not content with just letting you get on with the sizeable job you
were already doing we decided to spice things up for you once Kate
left us for her career in the police. We add one more person whose
phone you are to answer, whose messages you must take. Jen, not one
word of complaint, just an "ok" and a cheery laugh. Whenever a task
has come up that doesn't quite 'fit' who do I ask to do it. Yes you
Jen. You've taken on so much and just got on and done it.
So now who is going to be sitting at Jen's desk because now it is
your desk. We'll refer to it as Jen's old desk not Andy's old desk.
There are similarities though. You both have 'busy' desks. At times
I've wondered why there was a need to surround yourselves with empty
drink cans and half eaten food but then here at home I'm completely
surrounded by BBQs so each to their own!
So now you are leaving us Jen. You are moving onto a new and very
exciting part of your life. A new job and your own place with Andy.
Perfect for you!
Now my only problem is who is going to do Jen's work?
Over the time that you've been with us you have shown us a huge
amount of loyalty and commitment and I want to take the opportunity
to thank you. I've seen you blossom over what has turned out to be
nearly a year. You've learnt a lot and Baxi will benefit greatly from
all that you have learned.
I wish you every success in your new job and in your new flat. Don't
be a stranger. Do come back and see us.
We welcomed Andy's Girlfriend but we say goodbye to you Jen, Jenny.
Someone who has very much become part of the team! We'll miss you.
Much love
Paula
