Year in Review - 2004

2004 is nearly done, so I'm opting for a summary of sorts, rather than meme I've seen around. The year brought a number of fannish changes for me. If last year was the year of mutants and wizards, then this was the year for nostalgia. I returned to my old love of comic books, especially the DC Universe, rediscovering my favorite characters through "Justice League" episodes and the occasional graphic novel. I delved into "Firefly" and mourned its loss along with everyone else. I actually tried my hand at writing longer "Highlander" stories. I wrote no new "Harry Potter" fanfic, even drabbles. I've actually gone ahead and removed most HP communities except the two daily newspapers and LW ones. I'm sure the writing bug will hit after the next book arrives. I've had even less urge to write more "Remember WENN" fic.

I attended Media West again, sharing a room with normadesmond. We had an interesting night watching the Weather Channel as multiple tornadoes touched off in the Midwest while we were there. I converted several unwitting people to the Cult of the Dana and Alphasmart.

My Nano novel "Alter Egos" was directly inspired by my rediscovery of the Golden Age heroes. I met Chris Baty and successfully completed the three-peat. Afterwards, I promptly went into writing hibernation for a month, while my mind and hands recovered.

I toasted the memory of JRR Tolkien in "Into the West".

I did icon fic challenges, which turned out a fascinating collection. "Shirahime" celebrated the pain of the winter season, while Emma Frost seethed. Methos grumbled about being a myth and then substituted for Indiana Jones. Morden decided who to ask "What do you want?"

The X-men weren't as active as I'd have liked. I suspect some of the letdown came from the shakeup of the comicsverse. Most of my posts on x_men100 were humorous for a change. The only serious article was my Olympics news article "Higher Faster Stronger". The X-men MST3Ked themselves in "Everyone's a Critic". The crossover challenge sparked an encounter between Kitty and Oracle in "You have mail" and the characters of Ruse popped up in "The Great Detective/Not Again". The one longer piece was "Just Because" from a 15minuteficlets challenge that proved that Scott has a few tricks up his visor.

For musical100 I visited "Into the Woods" twice with "Maybe they're really magic, who knows?" and "Curses!" a wacky crossover for the World Series. I spent an all too brief time in 1776 with "Separate Lives".

At tv100 Stephen Franklin made "Excuses" for his stims addiction. Richard Biggs would tragically die three months later.

For highlander100, I channeled Rebecca Horne in "Foolish Dreams" and Methos in "Do Something", "Just Another Day" and "Old as Dirt". I also inserted myself into the HL universe as Methos' nightmare in "Never Interfere/Too Good to be True".

I also wrote several longer HL pieces. One was "Playing the Game", Methos' POV on the first encounter with Duncan. In my most obscure crossover, Methos visited Ambridge of "Archers" fame and experienced an "Identity Crisis" when they wanted to run him out of town. For hl_springfever, I wrote "Passing Storm" about Rebecca and Amanda's parting.

For ff_friday, I wrote Afraid, Sticks and Stones and Joi de Vivre. For the Firefly ficathon, I wrote about Kaylee and Inara in "Hey You".

15minuteficlets gave me an outlet that was slightly longer and less structured than drabbles. I wrote my only "Witch Hunter Robin" fic in "Always the Hunter" I wrote about Carter and Hector Hall in "Fate's Misfortunes". And I peered through the "Eyes of a Bat" after reading "Batman: Murderer/Fugitive". I'm still not sure why I wrote "Counter Punch".

Discovering the "Birds of Prey" comic, Black Canary returned as my favorite DC universe character. I wrote a generator fic, plus I listened to her mother tell her "Maybe when you're older" for dc_flashfiction. I revisited Barry Allen's last stand in "Crisis" in "Fast Enough".

And lastly this year, I revisited the Sensor Girl mystery with "Masks and Illusions", marking my return to the 30th century. I used caia_comica's generator to wonder if Molly Mayne ever knew Carol Ferris.

I probably missed a few drabbles, because even in the best libraries, things go incorrectly shelved. I doubt I'll write anything between now and January 1st, but you never know.
