The Title of John Carter and why it has everything to do with Gender in Hollywood: I find the discussion wholly ironic because of my twitter list, the ones really excited to see the teaser trailer were all women. And not the lead-actor-is-a-babe factor, but they were fans of the Barsoom/John Carter of Mars books and were honestly interested by the adaptation. Which apparently the director can't imagine them wanting to see if it has "Mars" in the title. Of the men on my pulp lists, they'll be irritated they didn't keep the original name (i.e. "Princess of Mars") and not care one whit about the wommins/females. Personally they could have argued that there was a horrible made-for-dvd/Netflix WI "Princess of Mars" a few years ago and we wanted to distance ourselves. Safe approach and it wouldn't have ruffled any prospective movie goers. As it is, we're back to "girls don't want to see sci fi" stereotypes. Meanwhile I'm ebooking the first John Carter book and marveling at his descriptions... (As an alternative, there's also
audiobooks/podcasts for the first four Mars books.)
Dropped out of
history_bigbang. It just wasn't happening for me this round. Ironically my Nano was technically historical, although it really wasn't as much of an element as I liked. Haven't decided if I'm
fandom_stocking-ing this year.
