Thor redux

On a whim (and needing an escape from the apartment), I went to see Thor again. 2D is absolutely fine for this movie, guys. I noticed no appreciable difference between the showings. Asgard was just as glorious this time around.

The trailers were much more appropriate with the 2D version. I suspect the 3D ones are geared towards getting people seeing further 3D or IMAX movies. This time I had two different Green Lantern trailers/previews, one Captain America, one Super 8, and Colombiana. Green Lantern still can't quite make up its mind if it wants to be epic adventure or wacky Earth conspiracy stuff. Still think they cast the leads completely wrong, but maybe the rest won't suck? The First Look section promised another Gettysburg documentary from History Channel, this time by Ridley and Tony Scott. I didn't know the Civil War was accompanied by rock guitars...

The First Look also featured a new ABC Family show called "Nine Lives of Chloe King" for June, based off a series of young adult novels by lizbraswell. Chloe King is the typical normal girl that develops special powers and discovers she's different. Strangely the setup reminded me of Batman Returns' origin for that Catwoman, complete with teenage blonde Selina, catlike powers, and nine lives. No black leather fetish or rich boyfriends but time will tell...

I still enjoyed the movie a lot. I do wish they'd explained certain parts, like the whole "Odinsleep" concept. And while I understand the necessity of setting the Frost Giants up as Asgard's mortal enemies, I almost felt those battles (especially the first one) went on a little too long. But Branagh would know about endless battle sequences, wouldn't he?

There are a couple of cameos by comics creators in the movie. J. Michael Straczynski is the first guy that tries unsuccessfully to pick up the hammer on Earth, prompting a few "Grounded" jokes thrown his way. Stan Lee makes an appearance too. Walt Simonson can be spotted next to Lady Sif at the ending banquet and in an interview, he says his wife Louise and Marvel editor Ralph Macchio are down at the other end but we can't see them. Strangely I think it's an apt place for both -- JMS is known for bringing Thor down to Earth and Simonson for bringing Asgard to life.
