The ancient Chinese curse about living in interesting times clearly applies to comics. I've seen Bucky and Jason Todd return, I've seen Dick Grayson become Batman, I've seen Superman walk, and Wonder Woman get a
complete and utter makeover.
All this when we should have been celebrating Wonder Woman for #600. The week started off great on the DCU Source blog. We had essays from Lynda Carter, we had gorgeous pin-ups frm Nicola Scott and Phil Jimenez... and then this bombshell.
If they wanted to get people talking, they succeeded. Everyone seems to have an opinion, whether it's "Hell yeah the chick has pants!" or "Great Hera, what did they do to you?" Hopefully this will translate into more people reading about Wonder Woman.
Reading the interviews with J. Michael Straczynski, though, I'm worried. And it's not just he doesn't get her, it's the feeling that he doesn't appreciate everyone that came before. Or the fans that have stuck by the character, some more fervently than I have. Gail Simone loved the character. You could hear it every time she talked about Diana whether in interviews or message board posts. With JMS, I hear that reverence for Superman, I don't hear it for Wonder Woman.
To quote "All about Eve", fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night.
