The fourth episode of "V" stepped things up, but also showed the show's problems for me. This show could be fascinating, but not with this lineup of characters. I can't stand either Georgie or Tyler; I'd be quite happy if either of them died a horrible death or written out in some fashion. Valerie is too bland. There are just too many characters I don't care what happens to them.
The Visitors are clearly masters of manipulating human paranoia. They've studied us long enough to know what we fear and what we can't deal with. Our health is a constant worry, so why not use that to their advantage? On the other hand, I'm not sure now is the time to be pinging on the flu vaccine. And last I checked the flu vaccine doesn't do anything for the common cold. Chad isn't completely clueless, but they've obviously found a way to keep him in check. I'd think Valerie would be taking extra precautions with her heart ailment. What happens when the V doctors discover she has a little hybrid coming? (Another Starchild or another Hera?)
We did get some answers in this episode. A V suicide pill leaves no physical trace behind, explaining the ash. On the one hand, no one finds weird alien physiology in dead bodies, but isn't someone going to notice a body that turned to a pile of ash? We see "the Bliss" which Project Rungay
hysterically described as "Anna acting out her own little Chanel No. 5 commercial for the V population". It appears one part drug, one part religious experience... we didn't see Ryan experiencing it, so obviously he's no longed hooked into it.
Aside from Ryan, the V men all look very similar, so it's really hard to differentiate between them. And yet they're more interesting than most of human men: Marcus, Joshua, and Ryan, one loyalist(?) and two traitors. Joshua's anguish at "skinning" a friend in the name of protecting the fifth column was painful. Clearly Anna has no qualms with making examples of dissidents. I leave the question mark with Marcus, because we really don't know all his motivations. When he was telling Anna about Dale's murder, I had the feeling he knew more than he was telling. And there's the identity of the mysterious "John Mays". Let the detective work begin...
I'm starting to actually think Anna is Lisa's biological mother. The way Anna tousled Lisa's hair was sorta maternal and proud and "Look at my little girl". Interesting how they're contrasting Anna with Erica and her lack of motherly presence. Whatever they have planned for Tyler won't be pretty I have a feeling. Wonder if he'll become an even bigger commodity once they learn about his mother...
The final shot of the armada wasn't quite as awe-inspiring as the original. I miss the sleek designs of the old mother ships. But maybe it'd be a little hard to hide an alien armada on the dark side of the moon these days.
