Honey West

liviapenn inspired the goofiest addition to my Netflix queue, the 1960s era show Honey West, starring Anne Francis. I've needed a break from my anime watching, hence dipping into the swinging sixties set. She posted about the show here and here. The show was based on a series of novels written by a husband and wife duo.

It's an early Aaron Spelling show which means clothes, cars and California glamour. I don't know whether to covet the cars, the wardrobe or the gadgets. The soundtrack is winner too, swanky and jazzy in the Perry Mason vein. Honey West and her partner Sam are private investigators, although they seem to get conned a fair bit by their clients. The show is only half an hour, so the mystery part of the show tends to get a little shortchanged. Anne Francis makes a glamorous yet tough Honey. With her slightly wry delivery, Francis reminds me a little of Elizabeth Montgomery. Honey's clothes are by Nolan Miller who designed for a lot of Spelling's shows, including Dynasty. Honey's clothes are fairly low-key compared to the shoulder pads and sequins of the later era. Sam Bolt is played by John Ericson and he and Steve Trevor could probably trade some stories about being saved by the girl. (And maybe Giles -- Sam gets hit on the head a lot!) He tends to yell a lot at Honey especially when she's done something he sees as foolish. He's also the one usually stuck on surveillance so maybe he's pouty she gets to have all the fun. Aunt Meg is sorta the Aunt Harriet character. I don't know quite why she's there other than to provide an insider's perspective on Honey and Sam. She doesn't tend to get directly involved in the cases all that often.

There is also an ocelot named Bruce. He appears to spend most of his time on Honey's couch, gnawing on anything his teeth can find, including arms and fingers. It's hard to find fault with Bruce. Everyone needs an extra large house cat, don't they?

It's fun and mindless and hella stylish.
