Bubblegum Crisis/BOP fusion notes

So jarodrussell posted about "Bubblegum Crisis" and the idea of Ted leaving behind the prototype hardsuits. I started getting all nostalgic over the series. It was one of my early exposures to "real" anime, rather than the stuff watered down for American audiences. This was back when you had to hunt for any Japanese animation stuff. These days I trip over it in the local video store.

Then I compared the two teams -- four women each, counting Oracle, Dinah, Helena, and Zinda for the Birds. Could you recast them? Not perfectly, but it's doable with a few adjustments.

Syllia Stingray lines up neatly with Oracle as the mysterious ringleader and wealthy businesswoman. She's mostly behind the scenes, but she can fight well enough on her own. The creation of the boomers and Syllia's father's death reminds me of the OMACs. Maybe Ted left behind the hardsuits as a way to fight against the OMACs or protect them from the OMAC infection?

After some thought, Priss Asagiri would be Dinah, the tough no nonsense field leader. Priss is a hard rocking biker chick in the series and I associate Dinah more with the motorcycle than Helena. Also Priss sings in a rock band. Canary cry anyone?

Nene Romanova is a little hard because she's similar to Barbara, a bubbly red headed hacker, more known for her technical skills than her fighting prowess. In the Tokyo 2040, she's a police dispatcher for crying out loud. So do you switch around Zinda to Syllia's role? Her age could add to the mystery. But that would make Oracle part of the ground team. Obviously Zinda has enough skill with aircrafts and weaponry to spare...

Linna Yamazaki is the new girl on the block. Despite Zinda joining later, Linna sounds a lot like Helena, especially with the string of ex-boyfriends.

Secondary thought makes me wonder how Checkmate, particularly Sasha and Mr. Terrific would fit into this world. Syllia's backstory implies heavily she had some form of augmented brain. Babs has her natural photographic memory, but there was also the Brainaic virus in her system.

Tertiary thought reminds me that their personalities/backgrounds are very different whether it's original BGC or Toyko 2040 so Dinah could easily be Helena.

Note to self: Original series on AOL Video. I have the followup Toyko 2040 series on dvd, so I'm only missing the Crash series. I really need to rewatch and see if it works as well in practicality as in head.

things i'm not writing, bgcbirds, oracle, anime, huntress, birds of prey, black canary, blue beetle
